PROGRAMS & SERVICES

The University of the Virgin Islands offers a wide variety of programs and services designed to help attending and aspiring students and the general community realize their dreams through educational empowerment. These include, among others:

EARLY ADMISSIONS PROGRAM (EAP) (693-1150) ... gives academically talented seniors from local high schools the opportunity to attend and receive credit for college level courses. Initiated in 1975 in cooperation with the Virgin Islands Department of Education, the EAP also allows participants to apply selected university class work toward graduation requirements.

EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTER (ECC) (693-1020)...oversees UVI's participation in the social and economic development of the region. Its primary mission is to foster the development of human and natural resources and to enhance inter-island relations. The ECC Social Research Unit compiles and analyzes social and economic data and supports the work of the U.S. Census Bureau in the U.S.Virgin Islands.

EARLY MEDICAL SCHOOL SELECTION PROGRAM (693-1003)...provides pre-med students with gradual transition into the medical school curriculum through provisional acceptance to Boston University School of Medicine at the end of their sophomore year.

HEALTH CAREERS OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (HCOP) (693-1243) ... is designed to enhance the mathematical proficiency, problem solving abilities and reading competency of college-bound graduates in the 16 secondary schools of the Virgin Islands. It advises UVI science and mathematics majors on applying to medical and health professional schools, and assists in strengthening test-taking abilities, particularly for the MCAT and GRE entrance exams.

LIBRARY SERVICES: The Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library (693-1360) ... on the St. Thomas campus became fully automated in 1992 and houses more than 75,700 volumes, 771,000 microforms and over 20,000 other items including maps, pictures and pamphlets and receives more than 800 current periodicals, and contains the Caribbean Collection, the Casper Holstein Collection, a collection of books on African culture and history and another on African-American and Caribbean culture. The UVI Library on the St. Croix Campus (692-4139) houses approximately 26,000 books, 325 journals and the Educational Resources Center (ERIC).

MACLEAN MARINE SCIENCE CENTER (693-1380) ... on the St. Thomas campus is designed to enhance the educational experiences of UVI students enrolled in marine science courses. The center also hosts field trips for elementary and secondary schools, and provides students there with an introduction to environmental concerns that affect their lives.

MINORITY ACCESS to RESEARCH CAREERS (MARC) (693-1003) ... administers four annual fellowships funded by the National Institutes of Health to junior or senior science/ mathematics majors interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree.

MINORITY BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH SUPPORT PROGRAM (MBRS) ... was established in 1985 to provide faculty and talented minority undergraduate students with an opportunity to conduct research relevant to biomedicine. The current MBRS program consists of three research projects -- predictor of psychiatric outcomes, lipid metabolism and synthesis of water, metals and phosphine.

NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE (NSE) ... enables sophomores and juniors to study for up to one year at 107 participating colleges and universities throughout the continental United States. NSE allows students to gain cultural and historical insight into different geographical regions, and to improve communication skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Since 1982, a total of 175 UVI students have studied on the mainland and UVI has hosted at least 150 students from other universities.

The REALIZATION OF ACADEMIC POTENTIAL (REAP) (693-1220, 692-4154) ... program is designed to build and strengthen the academic abilities that will enable students to reach their fullest potential. REAP offers courses to help students who demonstrate deficiencies in English, reading and mathematics upgrade these academic skills toward successful performance in college.

The REICHHOLD CENTER FOR THE ARTS was formally dedicated on the St. Thomas campus in February 1979. Its mission is to support programs that preserve and enhance the artistic heritage and cultural foundations of the Virgin Islands, wider Caribbean and the Americas; to enrich the cultural and social life of the University of the Virgin Islands and its community; and to provide internationally acclaimed programs and performances that exemplify the best of human artistic expression.

The SENIOR CITIZEN EDUCATION PROGRAM (693-1160) ... allows eligible senior citizens to enroll in UVI courses free of charge as degree or non-degree students.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER (SBDC) (776-3206, 692-5270) ... is a major source of the business management services on all three islands. SBDC provides business development services in the areas of counseling, training and technical assistance.

The SUMMER SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (693-1243) ... is a summer enrichment program designed to enhance the science and mathematics preparedness of college-bound high school graduates who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and allied health professions. Participants reside in residence halls on the UVI St. Thomas campus.

Piloted in 1995, the UVI SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR FUTURE GLOBAL LEADERS IN THE CARIBBEAN (693-1306) ... is a preparatory training program that equips the region's brightest students with the knowledge and skills needed to assume leadership in a global Caribbean environment. In addition to developing a personal leadership prospectus, participants learn international business, finance management, economics and cross-cultural communications.

UPWARD BOUND (693-1130, 692-4182) ... is a federally sponsored program that helps high school students prepare for college through academic instruction, academic and personal counseling, tutoring and mentoring, testing and admissions assistance; educational exchange and leadership, and exposure to cultural events.

The UVI LITTLE THEATER (693-1340) ... offers a wide range of live theater experience to students and the general community. Auditions are open to students, faculty, staff, and the community.

The UVI MENTORING PROGRAM (693-1121) ... promotes the personal growth and academic development of sixth grade and junior high school students at public schools in the Virgin Islands. It is in its fourth year and demonstrates UVI's commitment to community service, particularly the youth of this community.

TheWATER RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (692-1063) ... on St. Thomas conducts research on all three islands. WRRI also operates a solar-powered meterological observatory on St. Thomas. WRRI is developing standardizing guidelines for the water quality of the territory's cisterns and planning a study on the use of saline water for irrigating vegetable crops.

Located on St. Croix, the AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION (AES) (692-4020, 693-1080, 776-6492) ... conducts basic and applied scientific research on the development of food, feed production and the preservation of natural resources in the Virgin Islands. AES subject areas include horticulture, animal science and forages, aquaculture, pest management and forestry.

The COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE (CES) (692-4080, 693-1080, 776-6492) ... is designed to help Virgin Islanders cope with social, economic, technological and demographic change. The CES has units on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John which offer programs in pesticide management, environmental education, urban gardening, food safety and quality, and parenting and family-youth relationships, among others.

The RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS CENTER (692-4152) produces ... "The Caribbean Writer," an annual literary journal first published in 1987. "The Caribbean Writer" features new and established writers, and showcases short stories, poetry, plays and essays from the Virgin Islands and rest of the Caribbean.

About UVI!

The University of the Virgin Islands was founded in 1962 as a publicly-funded, liberal arts college. In 1972, it was designated a land-grant institution and in 1986 became one of the 117 U.S. historically black colleges and universities -- the only one outside of the continental United States. In 1986, UVI also changed its name to the University of the Virgin Islands to reflect the growth and diversification of its academic curricula, community and regional services, and research programs. UVI offers AA, AS, BA and BS degrees in business administration, education, humanities, nursing, science and mathematics, and social sciences. Also offered is an AAS (associate of applied science) degree in process technology in association with HOVENSA on St. Croix. The university also offers master's degrees in business administration, education, marine and environmental sciences, mathematics for secondary teachers and public administration.

UVI is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association. The UVI nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing. Currently, UVI enrolls approximately 2,600 full and part-time students and employs about 650 full and part-time faculty and staff.
