Mission Statement

In keeping with the overall mission of the University of the Virgin Islands, the Security Department is dedicated to providing a safe and secure working, learning and living environment. We create this environment with the help of the University community in a community policing approach, where each person takes an active role in helping to keep their area and in turn the community safe. We are a service-based organization with a strong emphasis on training and professionalism. We deeply value interdepartmental collaboration and positive interaction with the University community, as well as with the residents and visitors of the Virgin Islands.

The Security Department

The University of the Virgin Islands Security Department operates under the auspices of the Campus Executive Administrator for each campus. The Security Department is headed by a Chief of Security. The main office of the Security Department on the St. Croix campus is located in the Evans Center building room #509. On the St. Thomas campus the Security Office is located on the ground floor of Penha House and the Security gate installed in front of Penha House is a checkpoint for all vehicles entering the campus when the main gates are closed.

The Security Department on both campuses is open 24 hours a day, providing around-the-clock protection and services to the campus communities. Officers are on duty 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Department enforces UVI rules and regulations and aids in the enforcement of federal, state and local laws and statues. Security officers have citizens arrest authority and receive ongoing training from various enforcement officials in the Virgin Islands. They have a very close working relationship with the Virgin Islands Police department. On both St. Thomas and St. Croix there are police stations or substations adjacent to the respective campus. University Security Officers can easily be identified by their official blue uniform.

Any questions, concerns, and suggestions about campus Safety can be directed to the Chief of Security.
