The University of the Virgin Islands was chartered as the College of the Virgin Islands on March 16, 1962 by the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to that legislation, the founding objective was to provide for "...the stimulation and utilization of the intellectual resources of the people of the Virgin Islands and the development of a center of higher learning whereby and wherefrom the benefits of culture and education may be extended throughout the Virgin Islands."
Today, that mandate has been expanded to include the region and the world. In its brief but distinguished history, the University of the Virgin Islands has already produced many graduates who have risen -- and are rising -- to prominence in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Eastern Caribbean, the U.S. mainland and beyond.
The University opened its first campus on St. Thomas in July 1963, on 175-acres donated by the federal government. A second campus was established on St. Croix in 1964, on 125 acres also donated by the federal government.

Since 1965 and its first commencing class of 13, the size of UVI’s graduating class has grown to an average of 290. To date, alumni number approximately 4,000 -- and a significant number of these hold at least two UVI degrees.

UVI has a long list of alumni who have become successful within their own communities -- and beyond. Among these are senators, an ambassador and a premier, CEOs of major enterprises, university vice-presidents and professors, attorneys, physicians and dentists, commissioners, nurses, teachers, scientists and ministers.

In its brief but distinguished history, the University of the Virgin Islands has produced two Rhodes Scholars, Thurgood Marshall scholars and a Goldwater scholar who received a perfect score on the Graduate Record Examinations. We have a '95 mathematician who discovered two new prime numbers, now listed on the Internet; and alumni who have graduated from or are completing their medical degrees at the Boston University School of Medicine as the result of our Early Medical School Selection Program. We also have nursing graduates who produced an educational training film for Caribbean mothers-to-be and spearheaded legislation against elderly abuse; and two biomedical superstars pursuing their doctorates on full scholarships from leading universities. One of our former students is even a Pulitzer Prize winner! Maybe your name deserves to be on the UVI alumni list!

Alumni support for the institution is organized through the UVI Alumni Association. The association is comprised of seven chapters located throughout the Caribbean and U.S. mainland -- in St. Thomas/St. John, Tortola, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Anguilla, St. Croix, Washington, DC metro area and Florida.
