Four main vessels, ranging from 17 to 45 ft, support the research and academic programs. All vessels are located in Brewers Bay just steps away from the MMSC building. Vessels can also be stationed, in the short-term, on St. John or St. Croix with permission from CMES director and dive/vessel supervisor.

R/V Willie Mac II


The Willie Mac II is a production 43 foot motor powered shallow deadrise fishing vessel. It has a draft of 4.5" and a beam of 16 feet and is constructed of fiberglass. The vessel has dual helms, located in the wheel house and on the flybridge. The vessel is supplied with a compass, GPS/Charting system and forward searching sonar/depth sounder. This vessel is mainly used when taking large groups out on the water for SCUBA class, beach clean-ups or public outreach activities.

R/V Garuppa


The Garuppa, built in 2005 by Island Hopper International Boat Works, she has overall length is 30 feet with a 12 foot beam. The hull is of hand laid-up solid fiber glass construction with fiberglass encapsulated solid wood stringers. Power is provided by a 2011 380hp Yanmar diesel engine. On board equipment includes GPS navigation, electronic chart plotter, depth sounder, VHF radio. A hydraulic trap hauler is mounted on the starboard side just aft of the cabin.

R/V Depth Perception  

The Depth Perception is a 28ft Pro Kat manufactured in 2002 and acquired in 2011. It sports twin outboard Yamaha 225hp engines. It is equipped with GPS navigation, electronic chart plotter, depth sounder and VHF radio. It is heavily used for many different research projects due to is speed and versatility.

R/V Blue Runner

The Blue Runner is a 20ft Angler manufactured in 2006 and acquired in 2012. It has one 150hp outboard Yamaha engine. It is quick, easy to maneuver and great for many nearshore activities. It is used mainly by researchers and students for monitoring of nearshore coral reefs.

R/V Twin Vee

The Twin Vee is a 17ft vessel with one 50hp Tohatsu outboard engine. It was manufactured in 1999 and is our smallest research vessel. It is used mainly by students doing research in bays close to UVI but is always on hand for whatever needs may arise.
