CMES - Facilities - Research Vessels


Four main vessels, ranging from 16 to 45 ft, support the research and academic programs.  All vessels are located in Brewers Bay just steps away from the MMSC building.  Vessels can also be stationed, in the short-term, on St. John or St. Croix with permission from CMES director and dive/vessel supervisor.    

R/V Willie Mac II
42 ft. - 20 persons max
The Willie Mac II is a production 43 foot motor powered shallow deadrise fishing vessel. It has a draft of 4.5" and a beam of 16 feet and is constructed of fiberglass.  The vessel has dual helms, located in the wheel house and on the flybridge. The vessel is supplied with a compass, GPS/Charting system and forward searching sonar/depth sounder

R/V Garuppa
30 ft. - 12 persons max
The newest addition to our fleet is the Gruppa. Built in 2005 by Island Hopper International Boat Works, her overall length is 30 feet with a 12 foot beam. The hull is of hand laid-up solid fiber glass construction with fiberglass encapsulated solid wood stringers. Power is provided by a single 355 HP Cummins diesel engine supplied by two 100 gallon fuel tanks. On board equipment includes GPS navigation, electronic chart plotter, depth sounder, VHF radio. A hydraulic trap hauler is mounted on the starboard side just aft of the cabin.

Hind Site
28 ft. - 8 persons max
A recent aquisition, the Hind Site, is a Mako 284 Center Console built in 1984 by Mako Marine. She is constructed of fiberglass and powered by twin outboard 225 hp Yamaha four stroke engines. The overall length is 28 feet 5 inches with maximum beam of 9 feet 10 inches and a hull draft of 2 feet. The fuel capacity is approxamitly 225 gallons of gasoline. Current use has been in support of research projects.

The Whaler
17ft. - 6 persons max
Know simply as "The Whaler" it is our small, open, center console boat for use in Brewers Bay and inshore work. Built in 1998 by Boston Whaler the overall length is 16 feet, 7 inches with a maximum beam of 6 feet, 2 inches and a draft of 16 inches. The Whaler is powered by a 50 horsepower Johnson outboard and fuel capacity is 6 gallons of gasoline in a portable tank
