To advance knowledge and learning in marine, coastal and watershed systems through research, education, student training and outreach programs and to disseminate such knowledge to the academic body, scientific community, government agencies and the general public.

CMES Vision
To develop an international center of excellence in tropical ecology for the Caribbean region that will make meaningful contributions to our present and future understanding of how marine and terrestrial ecosystems function, so that they can be managed effectively.

GOALS:
CMES strives to:

  • effectively address environmental problems unique to tropical island communities through innovative research
  • facilitate collaboration among local, regional, and national researchers working to better understand how regional marine resources respond to a variety of perturbations
  • prepare students, and the regional governments they represent, to better address current and emerging issues related to natural resources and sustainable economic development
  • increase the public’s awareness and understanding of the linkages between healthy marine resources and dependent social, economic and political structures.
