The UVI Math Boosters Organization is committed to the promotion of mathematics appreciation.  Through various media the organization focuses on fostering a love for mathematics in students at various levels.  The emphasis on outreach programs advocates the value of mathematics to all within the community. Our logo was designed by a group of founding members and is used as the design on the front of the uniform shirts worn by members for all official functions.  It demonstrates that the many areas of mathematics are a united cycle and are all interrelated.  It also seeks to serve as a constant reminder that there are no limits to success.  All are encouraged to aim for the stars.

Acknowledges Remarkable Contributions and Achievements of it Members

The UVI Math Boosters Organization was formed in 1996 with a commitment to foster a love for mathematics through various activities on campus as well as outreach programs within the community.   It is no secret that with the achievements of the club, not only is it recognized as one of the most active student organizations, but is frequently referred to as the most prestigious club on campus. 

The Math Boosters organization was founded by Dr. Velma Tyson, a mathematics professor who still serves as its faculty advisor.  In addition to Dr. Tyson’s work, the club owes its strength to several top quality dedicated, hardworking students who have participated as officers and members through the years.  Many of the past members have graduated and are making valuable contributions to the community.  Some hold leadership roles in local businesses.

Several past members have graduated with mathematics degrees and have gone on to advanced degrees.  These include two who serve locally as secondary mathematics teachers and while one is near completion in the Masters in Mathematics for Secondary Teachers, administered by the College of Science and Mathematics, UVI, one has already completed the degree program.  Last year, two graduated with engineering degrees.  At the moment, at least three of the former members are in Ph.D. Programs. The organization engages in various community activities which over the years have included several workshops at schools and with community youth groups, tutoring on and off campus, presenting at open house functions at UVI, presenting at Saturday Academy sessions, implementation  of math retreats on and off island, beach picnics, and other social events such as bowling.
