I was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. My professional training at the University of the Virgin Islands (BA 2002) has excited me to continue on and obtain my Masters degree. However, my current job at the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Department of Planning and Natural Resources has strengthened my scientific knowledge. I’ve been an employee at Fish and Wildlife, St. Thomas for seven years. I plan and hope to continue contributing to the division and their function as a marine and terrestrial resource management and conservation agency during and after my schooling. I’m interested in marine and terrestrial ecology and biology, marine fish and invertebrate community ecology, wetland ecology, plant community ecology, and environmental education among other things. My invested and sincere interest in my community and recognition of the need for environmental improvement are my true motivations for pursuing a Masters degree. UVI provides me with the opportunity to delve deeper into environmental issues, concerns, and needs through advance education. Hannah Gray
Hannah Gray grew up on the coast of California, did her undergraduate work in Marine Biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and is a one-year USVI transplant. Her research interest is in the impact of watershed runoff on the viability of sea grass meadows as nursery environments. More broadly, she seeks to investigate Caribbean marine resource management questions using an ecology-based "systems" approach combined with policy work and public outreach. |

Sean Richardson
I was born on the beautiful island of St. Thomas and graduated from the Charlotte Amalie High School with honors on June 6, 1999. I attended the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology on May 14, 2005. I would like to contribute to protecting and conserving the precious natural resources of the U.S. Virgin Islands, in particular, our plant communities. As an undergraduate, I participated in research that examined forest succession and measured plant species richness and diversity. Subsequently, I would like to focus my graduate research on the ecological processes of succession and the measurements of species richness and diversity of plants and plant communities. |

Jean-Pierre L. Oriol
I have been employed by the Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program since 2000, and I have seen first hand the increase in development across our islands. While we have good environmental laws and regulations, overall, environmental management is not what it should be in the Virgin Islands. What I hope to achieve as a candidate for the Master of Marine and Environmental Science degree from UVI is the knowledge and expertise in overall natural resource management. My goal is that one day I will assist the Virgin Islands in implementing watershed management plans throughout the territory for better natural resource management. Without environmental management plans in place, the natural resources that are so near and dear to all Virgin Islanders will continue to degrade, and all that we know will be lost. |
