Math Honors Workshop
Mission:
The mission is to foster competitive undergraduate education in science, mathematics or engineering in order to produce graduates who are capable of solving challenging problems which demand interdisciplinary skills, training or critical thinking.
Program Description:
To promote interdisciplinary learning and strengthen student success in science, mathematics, engineering, technology and medicine, UVI provides a challenging program in a workshop setting where incoming freshmen explore problems in scientific contexts to help students understand how mathematics is used in science. Modeling the real world using the language of mathematics is a critical skill in the doing of science in the 21st century. Experiencing scientific problem solving using real data about the Caribbean environment is a key focus.
Activities:
Through this workshop, students will gain confidence in tackling new problems, thus moving from a level of “knowledge and comprehension” to a level of “application and analysis.” This will strengthen the student’s ability to succeed in a strongly quantitative science curriculum. Field trips will enhance connections to biology, chemistry, physics and the environment.
Awards:
Participants who complete the Math Honors Workshop will receive a certificate of completion and a book award.
