UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Program has a variety of Science & Math scholarships and research programs for the academic year. Students are considered ECS Scholars by participating in one of the following.
NIH MARC Research Trainee Program – This is a highly selective program that promotes excellence in careers leading to a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science. Research Trainees are funded for their junior and senior years to participate in research, seminars, graduate school preparation, UVI faculty mentoring, and must complete a challenging curriculum. Research Trainees receive stipends, travel sponsorship to off-island research conferences, and scholarships to cover tuition costs.
NSF HBCU-UP Research Scholar Program - For students interested in pursuing STEM careers, this program open to US citizen or permanent resident, full-time, bachelor degree seeking students in the Collegeof Science and Math. Research Scholars are funded for the academic year to participate in research, seminars, community service, and mentoring. Scholars receive monthly stipends and travel opportunities.
NIH MBRS-RISE Scholars Program - for students interested in a career in biomedical research and should be pursuing a major in mathematics, chemistry, biology, marine biology, computer science, psychology or nursing. Research Scholars work on a research project during the academic year and receive competitive stipends as well as travel sponsorship to off-island research conferences, graduate school preparation, and mentoring. Scholars are also actively involved in service learning through community service.
ECS scholarship and summer research applications are typically due on February 28th. To be considered, students must be admitted to UVI, complete an application form, have a minimum grade point average of 2.7 to 3.0 depending on the program, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
