Emerging Caribbean Scientists Programs

STEM Supplemental Instruction

The MBRS-RISE grant supports supplemental instruction for entry level Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics courses.  Students participating in at least 80% of the supplemental instruction (SI) sessions receive a certificate at the end of the semester.  This program’s aim is to improve student retention and persistence.

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI is a non-remedial approach to learning enrichment that increases student performance and retention. SI offers regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in a targeted course. SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.

How does it work?

At each session you will be guided through course concepts by your instructor.  The instructor or “leader” could be a professor or a competent student who has previously taken the course and been trained in group facilitation techniques. Your leader will not re-lecture or give you his/her class notes. Your leader will not do your homework or your thinking for you. Your leader will not encourage ‘last minute’ cramming for a test or exam. Your leader will help you make good use of your study time and teach you how to study more efficiently.  Your leader will share with you the strategies that worked for her/him when taking the course.  SI is a place where you can comfortably voice your questions and concerns and get answers in a group setting.

What's in it for me?

If you attend SI sessions regularly, chances are you'll earn a better grade. Research shows that students who attend SI sessions regularly average one half to one full letter grade higher than their classmates who choose not to attend. By attending SI it could mean a difference from failing to passing or a difference between an A or a B.  It provides a ‘competitive edge’ particularly for those of you pursuing professional careers or wanting to continue to graduate school.  When you attend SI, you'll develop a better understanding of course content by reviewing the material as well as transferring these skills to other classes that may not have SI support. SI also helps you to develop coping skills to adjust to university life.

When do sessions start?

SI sessions start the first or second week of classes. The only thing the instructor is waiting for is knowledge of your availability. The survey you fill out on the first few days of class asks for your schedule. The SI leader will look at the schedule and find times that work for you. Remember, the secret of success is to study proactively! Don't wait until the night before the test!! Since you have to study anyway, why not come to SI and make efficient use of your study time? Your SI leader will keep you informed about the times and locations for sessions.

What does it cost?

SI costs you nothing except your time. Assistance is free! Come as often as you like. Keep in mind, though, the statistics show that the more you come, the better your grade.  Also if you attend 80% of the sessions you will receive a certificate.

How will I know if SI is offered in my class?

Your instructor will probably make an announcement about SI in class. An SI leader will also visit the class to explain the program and invite you to participate. After that you will generally find the SI leader in the class with you as well.
