Borrowing


  • Who may borrow books from the Libraries?

    Students who are registered for classes, faculty, staff and community borrowers, may borrow upon presenting a valid library card.


  • How many books can students check out from the library?

    For students, there is no limit on the number of books that can be checked out from the University Libraries.


  • What can I do if the book I want is checked out?

    If a book is checked out, students can place a request for the book. 

    A hold will be placed on the book which will not allow the patron, who currently has the book checked out, to renew it. When the book is returned, you will be notified.


  • Can I check out periodicals (magazines and journals)?

    Periodicals can be checked out for durations of one week.  The most current issue of each periodical can not be checked out.


  • How do I renew an item I have checked out?

    You may call 692-4130 on St. Croix and 693-1367 on St. Thomas to renew your items by phone or visit the circulation desk.   Past due materials will have to be returned to the circulation desk before they can be renewed.


  • What are the fines for overdue items?

    Books in general collections generate a $0.05 per day fine when overdue.  Reserve Books, Audio/Visual Materials and media equipment generate a $4.00 per hour fine.


  • Do the Libraries have copies of textbooks for classes?

    The Librarie do not purchase textbooks.  In some cases, instructors will place a copy on Reserve. Reserve materials are kept at the circulation desk.


  • What types of items can I request or reserve?

    Students may request books from the general, Caribbean, and government documents collections.  They may also reserve certain media equipment for use during classes and general use on campus.


  • How can I find out about new materials at the library?

    On the Libraries web site, library.uvi.edu, the link entitled “New titles blog” provides details on new titles in both campus libraries.


Computing


  • Do the Libraries offer customers wireless access to the internet?

    Yes, access is available throughout the libraries.


  • Do the libraries provide any software for student use on personal computers?

    Currently, students may download Microsoft Office  from the libraries website.  Visit library.uvi.edu, and click on the Inside UVI link; Login with your student ID number for the username and welcomeuvi as the default password.  You will be required to change your password the first time you log on.


  • Is there a scanner for public use in the libraries?

    Yes, scanners are available for student use in the library computer lab on St. Thomas.  Ask at the circulation desk in the St. Croix library.


  • Do the Libraries have fax machines available to the public?

    There is no public fax machine in the Libraries. Students may use the fax service provided at the UVI Bookstores.


General


  • What are the libraries operating hours?

    When classes are in session:

    Hours are: Mon-Thu 8:00am - 10pm; Fri 8:00am - 8:00pm; Sat 9:00am - 5:00pm; Sun 1:00pm – 8:00pm.

    Intersession:

    M-F 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

    The libraries are closed on University holidays.


  • How does a student get a library card?

    Students are added to the Symphony library system after the registration process.  The UVI ID card serves as the library card, with the barcode printed on the back. 


  • Do the Libraries have a typewriter that students can use?

    There are no typewriters for use in the Library on St. Croix but a typewriter is available in the CATS Center.  On St. Thomas, a typewriter is available in the main UVI Library Computer Lab.


  • Do the libraries have a lost and found area?

    Yes, items found in the Library are held at the Circulation Desk.


  • How can I donate something to the UVI Libraries?

    Donated materials are accepted for evaluation by the library staff. Only materials that meet the needs of academic programs will be added to the collection. Items not added are discarded.


  • Do the libraries sell office any supplies?

    No, currently the libraries do not sell office supplies.  Office supplies may be purchased at the U.V.I. Bookstore.


  • What office supplies are available to Library users?

    A pair of scissors, a stapler, a pencil sharpener, and a hole punch are available at the Circulation Desk for use in the Libraries.  


  • Do the libraries provide change for monetary bills?

    Change is provided for the use of the library’s photocopier. Change for other purposes may be obtained from the cashier office or the bookstore.


  • Can I eat and drink in the Libraries?

    No.  Eating is not permitted in the libraries. Taking food and drink in the library stack areas increases the presence of rodents, which destroy the books.


  • Is there a phone I can use in the libraries?

    The libraries do not provide a phone for student use.  However, there are public access phones designated for student use on both campuses.


Printing & Copying


  • How much does printing from the Libraries' computers cost?

    Students are given $20.00 in the PCounter account at the beginning of each semester.  This will allow for the printing of 200 pages.  Each time a page is printed, $0.10 will be ducted from your initial balance of $20.00.  Funds can be added to your PCounter account at the Library Circulation Desk or at self service stations in the labs.


  • Is there a copier available for public use in the libraries?

    Yes. The photocopier in the libraries accept cash. Some also accept copy cards.
