Applying for Financial Aid


  • How do I apply for financial aid?

    Complete the FAFSA  (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Financial Aid applications can either be completed on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov or can be completed by using the paper applications.


  • When do I apply for financial aid?

    The earliest you can apply is January 1st of each year.  The University’s priority deadline for the FAFSA application is March 1st  for the Fall semester and by November 15th for the spring semester.  The final federal processing deadline is June 30 of each year.


  • Do I have to apply every year for financial aid?

    Yes.  The FAFSA is year specific and must be filed for every academic year.


  • What documents do I need to complete the FAFSA?

    When completing the application, applicants and parents should have their financial documents as well as have access to their pin number in order to sign the electronic application.  Pins can be obtained by visiting www.pin.ed.gov.  In addition to financial documents applicatns should have the following:
    • Student driver’s license (if applicable) 
    • Student Alien Registration Card (if applicable)
    • Student and Parent (tax information)
    • Social Security cards
    • W-2 forms and other records of money earned
    • Records of untaxed income
    • Current bank statements
    • Business, farm, and other real estate records
    • Records of stocks, bonds, and other investments


  • Are only U.S. citizens qalified for financial aid?

    No. Non-citizens who have permanent citizenship or a green card and a valid social security number are eligible for financial aid.


  • If I did not file taxes, can I still complete the FAFSA?

    If you are not required by tax laws to file a tax return, you can still complete the FAFSA.  However you will be required to provide any source of income or benefits earned.


  • How can I contact the federal processors about my FAFSA?

    1-800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3243)


  • What is UVI's Federal School Code?

    UVI has two school codes. One for each campus. They are...

    • 006989 for the St. Croix Campus.
    • 003946 for the St. Thomas Campus.


Awarding Aid


  • Why should I file by the University's priority deadline?

    By filing your application by this date, you may qualify for campus based programs such as the Suppplemental Education Opportunity Grant, UVI Grants, Perkins Loan, and Work Study.  These programs are limited in funding and are only awarded to students who meet this deadline.


  • How do I apply for UVI scholarships?

    UVI scholarships are available in Mid-February through Mid-March for each academic year.  Most scholarships require a 3.00 GPA in order to qualify.


  • When will I receive my award notification?

    Once the application is complete and all required documents submitted, newly admitted students will begin receiving notification in May and returning students will begin receiving notification in June.


  • I attend college part-time, will I still be eligible for Financial Aid?

    Once, eligible, financial aid is available for part-time as well as full-time students. Part-time students can receive Pell Grants and Direct Loans.  However, students must be enrolled at least for 6 credits in order to have a Direct Loan processed.


  • Can I receive Financial Aid for summer classes?

    You may have remaining eligibility for a Pell Grant If you attended part-time during the academic year or were enrolled for one semester only.  You may also apply for a direct loan if you did not use up your full loan eligibility.  Be sure to check with the Financial Aid office.


  • If I withdraw from classes, will this affect my financial aid?

    If you completely withdraw from all classes, a withdrawal calculation will be done to determine the amount of financial aid that must be repaid.
