Assistive  Technology-Talking Scientific Calculator

According to the definition set by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (1997), Assistive Technology (AT) is: "…any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability."

 

This month I have highlighted a couple of talking scientific calculators.  These calculators are capable of utilizing standard mathematical, trigonometric, and scientific functions, and fractions.  These calculators are designed for individuals with visual impairments and dyslexia, but can be utilized by anyone.

Sci-Plus 300 Large Display Talking Calculator

This scientific calculator with selectable speech output has large high contrast eight digit LED display, highly visible keypad with color differentiated operation keys

Useful features include:

 

Light Weight: only 14 ounces

Large Print Manual

Earphone Jack: for private use

Universal Charger: with country specific adapters available on request

Orion T136X Talking Scientific Calculator

Has been called “the most advanced and affordable talking calculator”.  This calculator has over 127 scientific functions including 1 and 2 variable statistics, trigonometry and unit conversion. Large tactile, functionally zoned keys. Backspace/correction key

 

Useful features include:

 

Light Weight: only 11 ounces

Earphone Jack: includes high quality earphones for private use

Battery or AC adapter

Rechargeable battery: for over six hours of continuous use

Here are a few examples of how these AT devices could be used:

 

While using the voice mode with both calculators in a class room setting, the ear phone could be utilized for privacy, testing, and/or simple reduction of noise. 

The Sci-Plus has a large display that allows easier viewing, while the large buttons allow those with visual or physical issues to see and utilize the calculator with ease.
