Safety and Security at UVI - An Overview
The safety and security of UVI students, faculty, staff and guests are of primary concern. Through interdepartmental collaboration, many individuals are involved in keeping our campuses and their facilities safe and secure for all users. A professionally trained campus security force, residence life staff, faculty, staff and students are responsible for a number of measures to ensure, as much as possible, that students and their possessions are adequately protected.
The Security Department is headed by a Chief of Security.
The Security Department on both campuses is open 24 hours a day, providing round-the-clock protection and services to the campus communities. Officers are on duty seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Department enforces UVI rules and regulations and aids in the enforcement of federal, territorial and local laws and statues. UVI Police officers have full Peace Officer powers, and the Security officers have citizen’s arrest authority and all receive ongoing training from various law enforcement officials and agencies located in the Virgin Islands. They also have a very close working relationship with the Virgin Islands Police Department. On both St. Thomas and St. Croix there are police stations or substations adjacent to the respective campus.
New students and employees are briefed on University security measures during their orientation program. The Chief of Security and Security Supervisors are invited to new student orientation twice a year and to faculty and staff orientation at least once a year.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Prevent crime and apprehend offenders; investigate and report suspected or actual crimes.
2. Coordinate emergency response systems and procedures;
3. Conduct fire safety drills and test and maintain all fire prevention equipment and alarms;
4. Inspect buildings for safety compliance;
5. Provide safety and security orientation sessions;
6. Maintain a lost and found department;
7. Control parking and the movement of traffic.
8. Provide evening on-campus escort service for students, faculty and staff upon request.
In accordance with Public Law 101-542, as amended by Public Law 102-26, Students Right to Know and Campus Security Act, the University is required to provide information relating to crime statistics and security measures to prospective students, enrolled students and employees.
In accordance with House Bill 180 (Megan's Law), any person who is found to be a sexual predator, habitual sex offender, or sexual oriented offender, and resides in St. Thomas must now register with the Department of Justice. Students, Faculty and Staff Responsibilities
All members of the University community are urged to assist in making the campuses safe places by being alert, cautious, security conscious, responsible and by not taking safety for granted. Everyone who utilizes campus facilities must assume responsibility for the security of personal belongings and their own personal safety. Suspicious persons, dangerous or unusual situations, and all other crimes or attempted crimes including assault or attempted assault should be reported immediately to the Security Department. Everyone is urged to protect personal property by keeping residence hall rooms, entrance doors and vehicles locked and by not leaving keys or valuables in cars.
Behavior on Campus
The behavior of students, staff, faculty and visitors on campus is subject to the applicable University rules and regulations, Virgin Islands and federal laws. To this end, unlawful conduct by anyone may result in legal and/or disciplinary charges being brought against the person by University officials.
Sexual Harassment & Assault
The University is committed to creating and maintaining a community in which students, faculty and staff can work together in an atmosphere free of all forms of assault, sexual harassment, exploitation, or intimidation. Every member of the UVI community should be aware that such behavior is prohibited by both federal and local law, and by University policy. Sexual harassment is defined as deliberate, unsolicited, and un-welcomed sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature or with sexual implications. Personal compliments, social interaction, or relationships freely entered into and welcomed by the recipient do not constitute sexual harassment. Sexual assaults, forcible and non-forcible rape, are considered criminal offenses subject to disciplinary action, arrest and imprisonment.
Students who believe they have been sexually harassed in violation of the University's policy, should notify the Counselor. Employees who believe they have been sexually harrassed should immediately notify the University's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Officer (EEOC) through Human Resources. Victims of sexual assault, whether students or employees, should notify Campus Security as well as file charges with the V.I. Police Department.
Alcoholic Beverages and Illegal Drugs
The University of the Virgin Islands seeks to encourage and sustain an academic environment that respects individual freedom and promotes the health, safety and welfare of all members of its community. In keeping with these objectives, the University has established policies and guidelines governing the possession, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on the University's campuses. These policies and guidelines are in compliance with laws of the Virgin Islands.
UVI does not condone possession, use, or distribution or marijuana, LSD, hallucinogens or narcotics by anyone in any campus facility or on University grounds. Any individual known to possess, use or distribute such drugs is subject to disciplinary action, which could result in suspension, or dismissal, possible arrest, imprisonment and/or a fine, according to Virgin Islands and Federal laws.
Drug and Alcohol Prevention Education Program
Through the UVI's Drug and Alcohol Prevention Education Program, assistance is provided to UVI community members in finding alternatives to alcoholic beverages for stress reduction and promoting social interaction. It also provides referral services and resources for students and staff who experience alcohol-related difficulties.
Important: Don't become a target of violence.
University security has increased patrols in the campus area and investigates all incidents, but it is vital that each member of the campus community do everything he or she can to be safe.
