VIUCEDD - DD Council


VIUCEDD staff provides technical assistance as a member on the following committees and advisory groups.

ADA Ad Hoc Advocacy Committee

This committee functions for the purpose of advocating for people with disabilities under the American with Disabilities Act for accessible public accommodations in government and private agencies and businesses.

 

Advisory Committee on Early Childhood and Care

This advisory group collaborates with the efforts of the Governor's Council and advises it on all matters regarding the welfare of children from birth through school entry on matters of quality and availability of early childhood education and programs.

 

Autism: Learn The Signs: Act Early Campaign Summit and Task Force

This task force initially developed a strategic plan to train professionals and build capacity in early identification and educational intervention for children with autism in the Virgin Islands. Team members from collaborating agencies developed a plan during the summit meeting for Region 2 in New York in April of 2009.

Department of Public Works Transportation Advisory Group

This advisory group encourages communications between people with disabilities and the people responisibility for their transportation needs and resources. The role is to provide advice on improvements to transportation within the territory and how best to utilize resources.

 

Infant and Toddlers, Part C Virgin Islands Interagency Coordinating Council

Early Intervention ICC members from St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John meet quarterly in the territory to review the role of the ICC in the Infant and Toddlers Program of the Virgin Islands as well as to evaluate and or make suggestions to approve the Annual Performance Report for the Infants and Toddlers Program of the Virgin Islands.

 

Special Education Advisory Committee

The participants and members of this group advises the special education department of the Department of Education on evidence based practices in special education.

 

State Office of Special Education Secondary Transition Task Force

This collaborative task force, made up of members of governmental and non-profit agencies are developing a framework to draft a service model to implement in the Fall of 2009 to enable youth with disabilities to meet transition services and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.

 

Coalition for Visit Ability Advocacy Initiative:

VIUCEDD and 5 collaborating agencies are advocating and supporting a legislative bill giving tax incentives to homeowners who include accessible entrances, passageways and bathrooms in their building construction or renovation. Public awareness activities focus on speaking to legislators and disability forums for the re introduction and passage of the bill in 2009.
