ECS Application Process

  • My major is psychology or nursing. Am I eligible?

Yes! Our RISE and MARC programs have been expanded to support students majoring in Psychology or Nursing interested in research careers.

  • What supporting materials go along with an ECS application?

In addition to the online application form, students should also submit the following documents to gain full consideration. 1. Academic Transcript 2. Personal Statement/Essay 3. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation 4. Description of applications to other research programs An interview with an ECS Selection Committee member is also required.

  • When is the application due?

Typically, the application deadline is yearly on February 28th and can be found online at http://ecs.uvi.edu.

  • What questions are typically asked during an ECS interview?

    1. When do you plan to graduate from UVI?
    2. What are your academic goals?
    3. What are your career goals?
    4. What are your research interests?

Research Symposia

  • How do I prepare for the symposium?

Abstracts should contain the following information:

        • Presentation Title
        • Presenter/Presenters
        • Faculty Mentors and Affiliations
        • Acknowledgement of Funding Source(s)

  • Why do I need to register for the research symposium?

We ask students to register so that we can anticipate, and plan for, the total number of presenters at the symposium. Registration ensures that we have an adequate number of poster easels, meals, judges, abstract booklets, etc., for symposium participants. Please register only if you plan to attend the event. If you register and then do not attend, you prevent other students from benefiting from the symposium.

  • What are the evaluation criteria?

Presenters will be evaluated based on their visual material(s), research content, oral presentation, and ability to answer questions.

  • What is the recommended dress code?

We recommend that participants dress in business attire for poster and oral presentations.

Summer Programs

  • Is there a summer research opportunity for non-UVI students?

No. Unfortunately, our summer research programs are specifically designed for students attending the University of the Virgin Islands.

  • What is the cost of ECS summer programs?

Free! Our summer programs are federally funded and are at no cost to the student or thier families.

  • When is the application for Math behind the Science due?

The application and all supporting materials should be received by May 15th.

  • Where do I find the Math behind the Science application?

Applications are online and can be downloaded by visiting our website at  http://ecs.uvi.edu and choosing Math Behind the Science under the Summer Programs menu. Also, you may send an email request to ecs@uvi.edu. Print copies are available upon request by calling Ms. Sanchez at 340-693-1249.
