***Funding for SEAGEP will end on FEBRUARY 2013***
Program Description:
The South East Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (SEAGEP) unites a group of institutions that have considerable experience in higher education diversity programs, a history of collaboration, and together have enormous capacity with respect to both opportunities for graduate studies as well as large numbers of undergraduate students in technical fields.
The SEAGEP Program unites several research extensive communities including University of Florida, Clemson University (CU), University of South Carolina (USC), Florida-Georgia Louis B. Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP), South Carolina Louis B. Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (SCAMP), and University of the Virgin Islands. SEAGEP also provides international opportunities for students through a collaboration with the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI).
Mission:
SEAGEP is committed to enhancing the graduate education experience for students in STEM who are preparing for careers in academia.
Goals:
This vision of SEAGEP is to develop a more inclusive, skilled, and versatile technical talent pool to strengthen the diversity of the nation's workforce, particularly academia, thereby contributing to the fields that are critical to the nation's economic strength, national security, and quality of life.
Undergraduate Opportunities:
SEAGEP Scholars Program @ UVI is designed to support engineering students to work with a UVI faculty mentor during the academic year. The research project is typically related to the students' career goals. Scholars receive a monthly stipend, travel opportunities and other support.
SEAGEP Undergraduate Summer Research @ UFL
offers an exceptional 7-week residential research experience for undergraduates (REU) program for science and engineering students at UVI. REU students are placed in research labs and work alongside faculty and graduate students on a project related to their career goals.
Summer Engineering Class - We are collaborating with the University of Florida, our SEAGEP partner,
to offer a Statics course during the summer. These courses are
typically three week intensive courses beginning roughly right after
graduation. Thus, students can still participate in other summer
programs. This course should be of particular interest to those
students in the dual degree engineering program. Videoconferencing is
available to St. Croix students. Please contact the Dean of Science and Mathematics for offerings.
EGR 211 - STATICS. A study of
forces and force systems and their external effect on bodies,
principally the condition of equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies.
Includes a study of distributed forces, centroids and center of gravity,
moments of inertia, analysis of simple structures and machines, and
various types of friction. The techniques of vector mathematics are
employed and the rigor of physical analysis is emphasized. Three hours
of lecture per week. Prerequisite: EGR 110 or PHY 241. Corequisite: MAT 242. 3 credits
Summer REU for UVI Dual Engineering Degree Students Starting at UF -
SEAGEP offers students an exceptional summer residential research
experience at the University of Florida – Gainesville Campus. This is a
wonderful transitional program for UVI students advancing to an
engineering degree program at Univ of Florida.
Special SEAGEP for UVI Engineering Students
- Students are placed in research labs and work alongside faculty and
graduate students on a project related to their career goals. Seminars
include student panels discussing topics including what to expect from
graduate school, how to choose a graduate program, and how to apply. At
the conclusion of the program, students turn in a research paper and
make an oral presentation to help them improve their oral and written
communications skills.
Graduate Student Opportunities:
SEAGEP offers graduate students awards, travel funding, international internships, career shadowing, professional development, and an annual meeting with students across the Alliance.
Faculty Opportunities:
SEAGEP offers partial support for two post doc positions, in collaborating with participating departments. The development of Latin American and Caribbean international research exchanges are faciltated through travel funding. SEAGEP works with faculty on recruting efforts, and offers a Mentoring Workshop to those who would like to more effectively mentor a diverse research team.
