Volunteers Rewarded for Efforts During UVI Alumni Phonathon Part II

UVI's Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs has announced the top fund-raising volunteers from the UVI Alumni Phonathon - Part II , held from May 23 through 26. A team of 120 dedicated and passionate volunteers placed over 2,500 phone calls, updated contact information and processed pledges, according to Linda I. Smith, director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs. UVI held Part I of its Alumni Phonathon in March when it reached out to regular alumni. For four days in May the attention turned to special alumni (SA) - persons who attended UVI or CVI (the College of the Virgin Islands) for a minimum of 12 months, but did not graduate.

  Volunteers who raised the most funds, and the prizes they earned, were: 1st - Linda I. Smith ('98, '03) - Two-night stay compliments of Treasure Isle Hotel in Torotla; 2nd - Yvonne Lawrence (SA) - One spa service compliments of Journey's Spa; 3rd - Kyza Callwood ('10) - Three-month gift certificate compliments of UVI Wellness Center; 4th - Marsha Bartlett ('11) - $50 gift certificate compliments of Essentric Shoe Boutique; 5th - Dr. Henry Smith ('76) - An autographed copy of "Heaven and Other Plays" compliments of David Edgecombe; 6th - Dr. Thelma Walters ('87) - One leather goods item compliments of Essentric Shoe Boutique; 7th - E. Jemima Parris ('85, '03) - A Calvin Klein leather wallet compliments of Clover's Shoe-Tique; 8th - Lorna Chesterfield ('82,'84, '89) - A $25 gift certificate compliments of Clover's Shoe-Tique; 9th- Denise Carty ('87) - A $25 gift certificate compliments of Clover's Shoe-Tique; and 10th- Tiffany Chichester (SA) - A clock compliments of the UVI Bookstore.

Volunteers in places 11 through 20 will receive gift certificates compliments of Plaza Extra Supermarket and those in places 21 through 30 will receive UVI memorabilia compliments of the UVI Bookstore on St. Thomas. Special thanks were expressed to Alliance Data Services for the installation of twenty telephone lines, Denise Humphrey (SA), who provided the celebration cake, and the Belgian Chocolate Factory for the rich variety of assorted chocolates.

Dateline: UVI Recaps 2011 Commencement Ceremonies and Alumni Phonathon Part II

The May issue of the monthly newsletter Dateline:UVI has been published and is available from the Public Relations page of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link. The issue takes a closer look at UVI's 2011 Commencement ceremonies and the recent Alumni Phonathon Part II. A limited number of printed copies of Dateline:UVI are distributed monthly.

Science 100 Offered During Summer Session II on St. Thomas Campus

UVI students who need to retake the course SCI 100 - The Natural World: The Caribbean - can do so during Summer Session II on the St. Thomas campus. SCI 100 is a Freshman Experience course and general education requirement for students entering UVI as freshmen. Students who have earned a C-, D or F in the course may retake the course to earn a better grade. Summer Session II classes run from June 23 to July 29. SCI 100 will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to11:50 a.m. for lectures, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for labs.

Registration for 40th 4-H Summer Academy Continues Through June 3

The UVI Cooperative Extension Service's (CES) 40th annual 4-H Summer Academy will be conducted from June 27 through Aug. 5, on St. Croix and St. Thomas. This summer's theme is: "40 Years of Believing - Another 40 Achieving."

The fee for campers ages 5 to14 is $200 for the first child and $175 for each additional child in the same family. Applications are available from the CES offices on St. Croix and St. Thomas or via e-mail by calling one of the numbers listed below. Completed applications should be taken to Room 139 of the Research and Extension Center on St. Croix or to the CES Office in the New House Building on St. Thomas.

Birth certificates and immunizations records must be presented with the applications, along with payment, at the time of registration. All registrations will only be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, through Friday, June 3, and on a first-come, first-served basis.

New UVI Residential Summer Bridge Program to Begin in July

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will launch a new program this July for graduating high school students who have been accepted to the University as freshmen for the Fall 2011 semester. The program will help students jump-start their college careers at UVI by improving their understanding and skills in Math and English, according to Dr. Haldane Davies, special assistant to UVI President David Hall.

Students, 40 on St. Thomas and 40 on St. Croix, will live in UVI residence halls and take courses in mathematics, English, reading and speech, while getting introduced to college life and the institutions' support systems. Registration Underway for UVI Summer Session II

Financial Aid Office Offers Summer 2011 Financial Aid Update

UVI's Office of Financial Aid has posted Summer 2011 Financial Aid eligibility criteria and documentation on the UVI web site. With the passage of the FY 2011 spending bill by Congress, the second scheduled Pell Grant award will remain in effect only for the Summer 2011 term. The second scheduled Pell Grant will be eliminated for Summer 2012. UVI Accepting Applications for the Master of Arts in Psychology Program

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. This graduate Psychology program seeks to prepare practitioners to use the science of psychology for the promotion of human well-being, specifically in the provision of psychological services to children, adolescents, and families in the mental health, judicial, and educational systems. It provides some with a stepping stone toward licensure.

Summer Research Symposium Slated for July 29 on St. Thomas

UVI's Summer Research Symposium is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 29. It will be held in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The symposium provides a showcase for a student research in STEM disciplines, with faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands, as well as at other institutions. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.) UVI Schedules Placement Tests for English and Mathematics

The following schedule for English Placement Tests and Math Placement Tests have been announced by UVI.

St. Thomas Campus

Date: Monday, June 13, 2011

Place: Sports and Fitness Center, Room 222

Time: 1:00-2:00 p.m. - English 100 (writing)

  2:30-3:30 p.m. - English 101 (reading)

  4:00-6:00 p.m. - Math

St. Croix Campus

Date: Monday, June 13, 2011

Place: Rooms Q 100 and R 100 (Nursing area)

Time: 1:00-2:00 p.m. - English 100 (writing)

  2:30-3:30 p.m. - English 101 (reading)

Students should bring two blue or black ink pens for English, pencils for math (calculators are optional and allowed on Part I of the exam), and a photo ID. Students should plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to any test in order to register.

CELL Notes...

SAT Prep Course Offered for Public High School Students on St. Thomas, St. Croix

The V.I. Department of Education, in collaboration with the UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center, is accepting applications for a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep course that will begin June 25. Applicants must be a public high school student on St. Thomas or St. Croix and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Interested applicants must submit their applications to the UVICELL Center by Friday, June 10, to be considered for the program. The SAT Prep Course is free and is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Education.


The program is designed to improve SAT scores by lowering testing anxiety and enhancing test-taking skills. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information or to request an application, call (340) 693-1106.
