Emergencies and Disasters and Augmentative and Alternative Communication

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) announces two (2) upcoming training on Wednesday, July 10, 2019. Both topics will be presented by Amy S. Goldman, MS, CCC, a Technical Assistance Specialist with the national Assistive Technology Act Technical Assistance and Training Center.

Seminar Topic 1: Communication Needs: Helping Families Prepare for Emergencies and Disasters

An important communication training will take place from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) office across from the Spicy Grill in St. Croix and will be delivered remotely to the St. Thomas Campus in the Teachers Education Building (TED) Room 103.

This training will help service providers such as Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupations Therapists learn ways in which to improve emergency preparedness for people with communication challenges.

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Continuing Education Units (CEU) credits will be provided.

Seminar Topic 2: Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC):  Myths and Realities

A community training will take place from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) office in St. Croix and will be delivered remotely to the St. Thomas Campus in the Teachers Education Building (TED) Room 103.

This training will give introductory information about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), how it can impact a child’s speech development, and how these devices can be funded.  Attendees will be introduced to the Communication Bill of Rights and discussions will dispel some of the common myths and misunderstandings about AAC. Parents, teachers, family members, and community members should attend this training.

The VIUCEDD Team hopes you will be able to send some of your team members to attend this vital communication training.

For additional information, please call VIUCEDD at (340) 693-1406 on the St. Thomas Campus or (340) 692-4265 on St. Croix to RSVP.
