UVI Welcomes New Professor of Data Science

The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Dr. Joanne Sylvia Luciano to the University’s College of Science and Mathematics. She will work in the department of Computer and Computational Sciences to develop curriculum in Data Science. This multidisciplinary field blends data inference, algorithm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems. Data science is ultimately about using this data in creative ways to generate business value while being sensitive to and respectful of data privacy, data security, data stewardship and the ethical use of data. UVI Call Center Hosts its Third Annual Thank-a-Thon

The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Call Center is hosting its 3rd annual Thank-a-Thon from Nov. 21-28. Alumni will be phoned and thanked for their contributions to UVI over the years. The Thank-a-Thon is primarily powered by highly trained UVI students and seeks to show appreciation for the support shown by the alumni and global community. read more

UVI Students Capture First Place in National HP Competition

Five University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) students won the 2nd Annual HP HBCU Business Challenge competition on November 12. The national competition was hosted and sponsored by Hewlett Packard (HP), a multinational enterprise information technology company. The competition is designed to inspire future talent, foster emerging careers in technology and increase student business acumen. read more

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 2018 Paradise Jam beginning Friday, Nov. 16, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. The highly anticipated basketball tournament tips off at 2 p.m. with the men’s games when Oregon University goes up against Old Dominion University. read more

Visual artwork of students from the University of the Virgin Islands Caribbean Art1 class, will be on display at an exhibit under the instruction of Professor Danica M. David, at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018. Art Thursday is a monthly activity on St. Croix which is held at Art at Top Hat Gallery, located in downtown Christiansted. read more

NOAA Environmental Literacy Program Awards UVI $500,000 in Funds to Advance USVI Community Resilience to Hurricanes

The University of the Virgin Islands has received $500,000 in funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Literacy Program (ELP) for its U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) Storm Strong Program. The five-year project will create the Territory’s first sustained, community-based, hurricane hazard preparedness program. Through new and strengthened partnerships and the development of a long-term community‐based program, middle- and high school youth and their families across the territory, will engage in on-the-ground projects that increase individual, family, and community preparedness for hurricanes. The program is free and will begin in 2019 on the island of St. Thomas, then expand to St. John and St. Croix. read more

Eastern Caribbean Center to Conduct V.I. Community Survey

The Eastern Caribbean Center of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will conduct the 2018 Virgin Islands Community Survey (VICS) during the months of November and December 2018. This scientific survey of a sample of households is a follow-up to the one conducted in 2016. The information collected is similar to that gathered in the Population and Housing Census of 2010. read more
