HackFest UVI unites designers, developers, and entrepreneurs for a world class hackathon competition, to build networks, cross pollinate ideas, and create new products and tools to innovate and improve the Virgin Islands community. A hackathon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in the software development collaborate intensively during a marathon event to produce creative new phone apps and other software products. The event is proudly sponsored by NEARiX and organized by UVIDEA, the innovation and entrepreneurship club on campus.

The event starts on Friday February 6th at 5 pm and ends on Saturday February 7th. On Friday afternoon, we will have an opening ceremony and social mixer. This would allow students and attendees to familiarize themselves with the sponsoring company. Additionally, hackathon participants can mix and mingle to find their group members for the follow day. Mr. Leon Hughes, the CEO of the sponsoring company NEARiX will open the ceremony with remarks. Kiva Wilson, the diversity manager at Facebook will also be available to comment to the event. On Saturday morning the event will kickoff at 8am and conclude at 5 pm after presentations. Students will work in teams of four or less around the clock to build projects and the event will culminate in student presentations before a panel of judges who will decide the winners and recipients of prizes for the most innovative and useful entries.

The event is open to all students and the general public is invited to attend. What would make me excited about attending? There will be a monetary prize for the winning team and random giveaways during the event. The experience is truly invaluable and the next major business may be created. This is an opportunity for students of all disciplines to gain. Where do I sign up? You can visit
