2016 HackFest in St. Croix

A hackathon/hackfest is a marathon problem-solving event that typically culminates in the concept for a new phone app or other digital solution to a problem. Student teams will work on product design and development ultimately producing a wireframe of the digital solution and an accompanying storyboard of describing the user experience.  All students are encouraged to participate as it is about problem-identification and solution-generation. One hackathon is held on each UVI campus during the Fall semester.

UVI Hackfest 2016 will gather designers, problem solvers and programmers to devise innovative solutions to health and wellness issues facing the Territory and the world.  The event is proudly sponsored by NEARiX, organized by UVIDEA, the student-run innovation and entrepreneurship club, and supported by UVI’s RT Park and VI EPSCoR.

New Follow-up Program:
Following the hackathons this year, we will be launching a new program -- Health Design Slam competition --- where teams will (over several months) create clickable apps and websites related to health and wellness. UVI has obtained free licenses to additional software that will allow the creation of these clickable prototype apps and websites without writing any code. While students participating in the Health Design Slam are not required to participate in the hackathons, the hackathons are a great way for student teams to start their exploration of issues and existing applications in the health and wellness space.
