Associate of Applied Science in Process Technology

Welcome & Overview:

The University of the Virgin Islands offers the two-year Associate of Applied Science in Process Technology (AASPT) degree on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Process technicians are individuals who have acquired the skills and knowledge to startup, operate, shutdown, analyze and troubleshoot industrial processes. These professionals are employed in process industries that include rum distilleries, power generation, water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals. The skills developed as a process technician are transferable nationally and globally. The starting national salaries for process technicians range from $50,000 to $60,000 per year, with excellent benefits.

The UVI Process Technology Program is an integral part of a national effort and strategy to address the need to produce process technicians for process industries throughout the nation. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS) there are approximately 800,000 process technicians in the United States and 80% of them are “baby boomers” who are now in the process of retiring, creating great opportunities for young people who desire to pursue this career path.

The vast majority of UVI’s process technology graduates are employed in well-paying jobs in process industries located along the United States Gulf Coast Region, the booming shale oil projects in the Midwest and Canada and as far away in the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, a significant number of the process technology graduates have been hired locally by companies such as Diageo USVI, Cruzan Rum, Seven Seas Water Corporation and the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.

Current News – February, 2015

Diageo USVI has agreed to offer internships to two process technology students for the Spring 2015 Semester. These students will work at the Diageo Rum Distillery on St. Croix for eight weeks Internships provide opportunities for students enrolled in the Process Technology Program to get “hands-on” experience and earn academic credit for on-the-job technical training in an industrial plant setting. Students will work alongside field experts in daily activities that will supplement courses taken in process technology.

All requirements for the degree must be completed on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.  Please consult the Director of the Process Technology Program or your faculty advisor for more information.
