Bachelor of Fine Arts Concentration in Music Performance

Entry Requirements

Interested students must follow the entrance requirements for the university.  In addition, fine arts entrance requirements must be satisfied one (1) week before classes begin.  Students must be either able to successfully complete a music theory placement exam or register for Introduction to Music (Music 124) during the semester of entry. An entrance audition must also be completed one week before classes begin.

Music Theory Placement Exam

Entrance exams include a written music theory portion. The exam will assess the student's knowledge of basic theoretical principles and practices. Students will need to exhibit proficiency in the following:

Unsuccessful candidates will need to enroll in MUS 124 Introduction to Music.

If a student enters outside of the scheduled entrance examination period, the entrance audition and theory placement exam are also given just before the beginning of the semester.

Suggested Audition Requirements

General Requirements

 Recitals: Fine arts majors and all students enrolled in MUS 161-462 Applied Music are required to perform in at least two recitals per semester and provide other musical services for the University as recommended by applied music instructors. Suitable performance attire is required.

Examinations: The final examination for MUS 497 Senior Research Seminar, is the presentation of the abstract and supporting segments of the proposed Senior Recital program.

The final examination for MUS 498 Senior Research Seminar is the presentation of the research paper and Senior Recital program in an open forum.

Ensemble Participation: Fine arts majors enrolled as full-time students are required to perform in at least one ensemble each semester of full-time enrollment. Students concentrating in piano and voice must enroll in MUS 242. Students concentrating in instrumental studies must enroll in either MUS 132 or MUS 133.

Music Organizations: Assignments to music organizations are made on the basis of audition or approval of the conductor.

Fine arts majors are required to earn a minimum grade of “C” in all required fine arts courses.
