The University of the Virgin Islands is pleased to invite you to the doctoral dissertation defense of Eion Maison on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. AST.
The topic is: “Exploring teacher burnout: The role of resilience and creativity in A disruption.”
The COVID-19 pandemic tested teacher efficacy, resilience, and creativity amidst widespread educational disruption. This study investigates factors enabling teachers to thrive, addressing the under-researched area of teacher resilience. Thirty-one participants completed a suite of instruments, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Educators, the Miller Cognitive Process Scale, the Short Scale of Creative Self, the Marlow-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and the Resilience Scale. Quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed a strong, statistically significant negative correlation between burnout and creativity (r = -0.562, p < 0.01), indicating that as burnout increased, creativity tended to decrease. Also, creativity was associated with greater resilience, which in turn appeared to buffer against burnout. This study explores these complexities with the help of teacher experiences.
Eion will present via Microsoft Teams, where he will provide an executive summary of his work and field questions from his committee, followed by questions from attendees.
