The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is proud to welcome Dr. Lora Battle Bailey as the new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Since stepping into her role on July 1, 2025, Dr. Bailey has immersed herself in the life of the University, engaging with faculty, staff and students, and preparing to lead the institution’s academic affairs with a deep sense of purpose and momentum.
With over 25 years of experience as a higher education leader, researcher and strategist, Dr. Bailey brings a wealth of knowledge and commitment to innovation in academic leadership. Prior to joining UVI, she served as Director of Research Development at Virginia State University, where she played a key role in expanding the university’s externally funded initiatives and helped faculty launch impactful research agendas. Across her career, she has secured more than $7 million in competitive grant funding and trained dozens of faculty and administrators to win their first federal research awards.
Dr. Bailey’s academic journey began in early childhood education at Auburn University and the University of South Carolina, with a lifelong focus on teacher preparation, evidence-based practice and academic excellence. She has held senior leadership roles at Indiana University Northwest, New Mexico Highlands University and Virginia Commonwealth University. She also served on the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), helping shape national standards that guide the next generation of educators. Dr. Bailey holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, an M.A. in the Art of Teaching, and a B.S. in Business Finance from Auburn University.
“It is a privilege to work alongside President George and support the bold vision laid out in our strategic plan, Grand Momentum,” Dr. Bailey said. “From the moment I arrived in the Virgin Islands, I’ve felt the passion and purpose that drives this institution.”
Originally from Hurtsboro, AL, Dr. Bailey is eager to build relationships across the UVI community—and beyond. “I look forward to meeting our alumni and supporters, listening to their stories, and learning how their UVI experience shaped their lives,” she said. “As we grow and evolve, their insights and engagement will be vital in ensuring we remain rooted in service while advancing academic excellence.”
In addition to her impressive scholarly and administrative track record, Dr. Bailey is also a dedicated mentor to graduate students and emerging faculty. When she’s not writing, mentoring or leading strategic initiatives, Dr. Bailey enjoys meeting new people, exploring local culture, sewing (when time permits) and participating in community engagement efforts—a commitment she’s looking forward to continuing in the Virgin Islands!
“UVI is thrilled to welcome Dr. Bailey to the Buccaneer family, and we are excited for the energy and vision she brings to her new role,” said President George. Together with the University’s leadership, I look forward to working with Dr. Bailey to advance UVI’s important mission.”
