The Career Services Center provides a variety of services to both full-time and part-time students of any major attending UVI.

Hear from the experts what employers are looking for in employees. You get the opportunity to participate in interactive, meaningful workshop sessions facilitated by career counselors, human resources professionals, career professional in various fields, invited guests, and even company CEO's as they shed light on workplace expectations, and help you develop skills and competencies to help you compete for jobs in today's demanding work environments. Workshops on various topics including, resume and cover letter development, interviewing tips, dress for success, effective communication, workplace ethics guidelines, professional etiquette tips, and networking strategies.

These are critical decisions that many college students face. Good career decisions require good information. Career Services Center (CSC) can get you started by helping you to identify your skills, aptitudes, values, personality traits and interests as they relate to your career goals. Make an appointment for career counseling, an assessment which helps you understand your work interests, values, abilities, and other factors that which indicates the type of work environments in which you might be most comfortable. In addition, we encourage you to develop professional networks by taking advantage of job shadowing and mentoring opportunities with UVI alumni.

Information about the "world of work" is everywhere. Talk to your professors and parents, join clubs and professional organizations as these personal contacts can be extremely valuable. The key to remember is that good research can lead to more satisfying career decisions.


Our Resources

  • The CSC has resource materials including the Occupational Outlook Handbook, to assist you in making career choice decisions.
  • Individual Career counseling sessions are available by appointment to meet with the Career Counselor. Students are guided through a process of self-assessment, exploration and research, experiential learning and informed decision-making.
  • Connect with UVI alumni who have volunteered to be resources.

There are a number of important considerations and tasks when applying to graduate school. You are strongly encouraged to discuss your plans with faculty in your discipline of interest, career counselors, and others familiar with this process.

Student Referrals

Refer students to Career Services for career assistance, resume critiques, finding a job or internship, interview preparation, or applying to graduate school.

I was hired at an office when can I begin to work?

If hired, a Student Record of Appointment (SROA) will be prepared for the student once there is a Request for Student Worker form submitted to the Student Employment Office. The SROA should be signed by all authorized persons for approval to work. The student must complete necessary employment documents (ex. W-4, I-9 etc-if not already on file). Students can verify this information with the Student Employment Office.


How can I get work-study?

Students may be awarded work-study as part of their financial aid package. Students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by March 1st each year to be eligible for federal/institutional work study. It depends on the Add: student’s eligibility and availability of funds. Students should Edit: can obtain additional information at the Student Employment Office Financial Aid Office.


How many hours can a student work on campus?

Students are eligible to work on campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer, students may work up to 35 hours per week. Students must not exceed the maximum hours stated on their Student Record of Appointment (SROA)/contract. UVI is dedicated to the educational success of our students and does not wish to keep students from their studies or limit participation in campus activities due to a demanding work load.


Will I be taxed on my earnings?

Yes. Income earned through Student Employment Program.


How will I get paid?

You will be paid bi-weekly via direct deposit or check. A representative from each respective department may be designated to pick up checks from accounting. Students can also pick up checks from the Accounting (Payroll) Department on Orville E. Kean (OEK) – St. Thomas and the Business (Cashier) Office on Albert A. Sheen (AAS) – St. Croix.


How can a student become eligible for Employment?

A student must be registered, matriculated, maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (cannot be on suspension).

Must be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident or an with hyphen F1 International Students who have attended UVI for at least one full academic Year. F1 students who are hired must obtain a Social Security Card.

Students interested in applying for on campus employment should visit https://careers.uvi.edu/ to view vacancy announcements and apply for positions. A cover letter, current resume, and unofficial transcript are some of the requested documents to upload for the online application.


What is the average rate of pay and how much can a student earn?

A student can be paid at a range of $10.50 - $15.00 per hour depending on available funds. Students can earn up to the maximum earnings listed on their Student Record of Appointment (SROA); Students should not exceed the amount indicated on their (SROA).


Is an on-campus job guaranteed?

No, students are not guaranteed a job on-campus.


Is this a "real job"?

Yes. Students will be working with career employees with definite functions that need to be fulfilled.


What is the dress code?

There is no standard dress code. Students are expected to dress neatly, clean and within reasonable limits appropriate to your work environment.

Student Employment

The Office of Student Employment assists students with processing their on-campus and off-campus student employment needs. The primary purpose of the on-campus student employment program is to provide part-time campus based employment to students who meet the criteria specified by the Student Employment guidelines. Undergraduate students are employed through Federal, Need-based and Non-need based Institutional work-study. Students are paid via the University's bi-weekly payroll.
