If you’ve tuned in to DaVybe 107.9 FM, you know the voice of Sheldon Turnbull.
A veteran radio talk show host and owner/general manager of DaVybe Radio, Turnbull’s
broadcasting roots trace back to his days as a commuter student at the University
of the Virgin Islands. In 1987, he enrolled in UVI’s engineering 3-2 program before
discovering his passion for mathematics and switching majors. He graduated in 1992.
Turnbull describes his experience at UVI as multifaceted. In addition to earning his
degree, he played on the volleyball team and performed in 14 theatrical productions.
“My education at UVI was comparable or superior to any renowned college in the States,”
Turnbull said. “Several UVI friends who went on to study in the States became teaching
assistants and tutors at their schools, which proved to me that a UVI education was
top-notch.”
His connection to the university did not end at graduation. Turnbull taught mathematics
at UVI for nine years before transitioning into the private sector, working as a sales
manager at AT&T and later at Knight Radio Stations. In 2009, he partnered with two
high school friends to launch DaVybe 107.9 FM, now one of the most popular radio stations
in the Virgin Islands.
Throughout his career, Turnbull has remained an active and engaged alumnus. He has
consulted on several university initiatives, including the rebuilding of UVI’s radio
station and collaborations with the Reichhold Center. He also regularly participates
in UVI events, including the Passport to the World educational travel program, even
broadcasting his show from Kenya during the most recent trip. “The trips have been
eye-opening,” he said.
