Afternoon on the Green is the place to be from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, as the University of the Virgin Islands celebrates its 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee. The St. Thomas campus Herman E. Moore Golf Course will come alive with food, music, entertainment and children's activities for UVI's annual friendraiser. This year's theme is "Honoring Our Past, Creating Our Future."

Food is the mainstay of Afternoon on the Green. This year will be no different, as familiar and exquisite foods prepared by some of the island's best cooks will be sold at $3 a sample. Some foods to expect include local "Red Peas Soup with Pork," "Not My Mama's Meat Loaf," "Jambalaya," "Potato Salad Delight" and "Vegetarian Chili." There will also be an ample supply of native drinks. The pastry area of the food tent will be named in honor of Sonia Castro, a long-time supporter of Afternoon on the Green, who each year contributes many cakes to the event. Expect pastries such as "Pineapple Topped Cheese Cake," "Carrot Pudding," and "Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes." Attendees who purchase $12 worth of tickets will have an opportunity to judge the food. Judging will take place, via text and paper votes, until 2 p.m.

"In addition to great food and family entertainment, we have included some new and exciting things this year, such as ice sculpting, a performance by the Shaka Zulu Nation and a motorcade by the Paradise Volkswagon Club," said Afternoon on the Green Committee Chair Jacqueline Sprauve. For the first time, Afternoon on the Green will feature a car display. The Paradise Volkswagon Club will lead a motorcade of 25 vintage Volkswagon Beetles on the green, where the vehicles will be displayed. Joining the entertainment line-up for the first time will be the Shaka Zulu Nation. Back for the second time, Dean's Cakes and Ice will create a special ice sculpture in honor of UVI's 50th Anniversary. There will also be performances by the Salsa on One dance group and the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers.

Sprauve said this year's entertainment should appeal to regular attendees and should encourage even more people to attend. Music will be provided Top Notch Band, DJ Pete and the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School's Flambo Combo Quelbe Band.

An enhanced Children's Corner will include bounce houses, relay races, jump rope, kickball, Frisbee and table games.

The Academic Tent will display information from each of UVI's schools and colleges, along with Access and Enrollment, the Small Business Development Center, the Cooperative Extension Service, the Reichhold Center and others.

"In spite of everything that's happening in our community, here's an opportunity to get together," Sprauve said, encouraging everyone to support UVI, celebrate the institution's 50th Anniversary and enjoy the togetherness that the event creates.
