The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) School of Agriculture and the V.I. Department of Agriculture will observe World Food Day on Sunday, October 16 with family-friendly educational activities on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix from Noon to 6 p.m. This year’s theme, selected by the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, is “Leave No One Behind: Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life”. World Food Day, officially celebrated on October 16th but observed worldwide during the month of October, brings attention to the plight of the hungry and undernourished in the territory and around the world. While admission is free, attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food drive. All items received will be donated to local food banks.

Event activities will include a formal opening ceremony, educational workshops, a food vendors’ court, a farmers' market, demonstrations, a petting zoo, entertainment, a “House of CANs” competition, and free vegetable seedlings. Each year, three agricultural products are highlighted, and this year’s selections are banana, eggplant, and chicken. There will also be a World Food Day “Super Chef” Demonstration featuring young aspiring chefs.

“World Food Day is a time when we assess food production, distribution, and nutritional value. We hope that you will join us as we commit to do something to help end world hunger. Come out and participate in this event, as we promote awareness and action to feed the less fortunate in the territory.” said Dr. Usman Adamu, UVI dean and director of Agriculture Programs.
