Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph the University of the Virgin Islands 59th Commencement Exercises on Thursday, May 11, at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and on Friday, May 12, at 1 p.m. in the Elridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas.
The event’s keynote speaker is renowned author and political and social commentator, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, who serves as the Centennial Chair at Vanderbilt University, Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society and Distinguished Professor of African America and Diaspora Studies. UVI will honor Dr. Dyson with an honorary doctorate.
The University will also present an honorary doctorate to Edward E. Thomas, Sr. for his contributions to the Virgin Islands community. Thomas played prominent roles as the director of the Internal Revenue Service and President and Chief Executive Officer and Board Chairman of the West Indian Company, Limited. Presently, Thomas serves as Chairman of the Board of the UVI Research & Technology Park.
Clema Williams-Lewis will also be presented with an honorary doctorate for her lifelong work to help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. As a social worker, Williams-Lewis, has been a champion for justice for those marginalized in society through her words and actions. She has also served as the Union Representative for Steel Workers of America and as a Building Representative for the American Federation of Teachers.
