The University of Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVI CELL) has received a $35,000 gift from Digital Lending Innovation (DLI), an Economic Development Commission beneficiary company based in St. Thomas, that will help enhance women's healthcare initiatives across the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dr. Latashia Edwards, UVI CELL’s community engagement manager, highlighted the significance of the gift, which will be instrumental in supporting the EmpowerU Youth Summit events being held on St. Croix (Feb. 10, 2024), St. Thomas (Feb. 24, 2024), and St. John (March 9, 2024), where UVI CELL will provide health education covering topics such as reproductive health, nutrition, mental health, and preventive care.

“DLI's gift is pivotal in advancing our efforts as we seek to collaborate with non-governmental and community-based organizations to reach diverse populations and address specific health needs within our communities,” said Dr. Edwards.

Representing DLI during the check presentation on Dec. 7, Executive Assistant to DEO and Office Manager Alice Barber confirmed the company’s commitment to making a difference in the Virgin Islands community and shared that the gift reflects the personal commitment of DLI to women’s health.

“Through this fund, we aim to empower women, enhance healthcare accessibility, and contribute to a healthier future. We believe that supporting women's health is not just a responsibility; it is an investment in the progress and prosperity of our community. Together with UVI CELL, we can lay the groundwork for healthier, happier, and more fulfilled lives for women in the VI,” said Barber.
