The University of the Virgin Islands’ (UVI) Albert A. Sheen Campus (AAS) on St. Croix has been awarded a $250,000 Campus Improvement Grant from The Home Depot’s Retool Your School Program. Now in its 15th year, the initiative continues to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by investing in sustainable campus improvements that enhance student life.
UVI was one of only eight HBCUs selected nationwide to receive the maximum award of $250,000. This funding will directly support the renovation and modernization of the residence hall on the AAS Campus—transforming it into a more welcoming, student-centered living space that reflects UVI’s commitment to student success.
“It’s a huge win for our community and a testament to the dedication and hard work of our Residence Life and Student Housing team,” said Dr. Colvin Georges Jr., dean of students on the AAS Campus. “This grant enables us to create a residential environment that supports student wellness, engagement, and belonging.”
UVI’s grant was announced at the Retool Your School Grant Reception on March 14, 2025, attended by UVI Vice President of Student Success and Innovation, Dr. Pamela Moolenaar-Wirsiy, Interim Director of Residence Life and Student Housing Marie Lamlen, and Dr. Georges.
“This award speaks volumes about the collaborative spirit of UVI and our unwavering focus on creating transformative experiences for our students,” said Dr. Moolenaar-Wirsiy. “We are deeply grateful to The Home Depot for their continued investment in HBCUs and proud that UVI has been recognized as a leader in student-centered campus innovation.”
The Retool Your School Program has invested over $15 million into HBCU campuses since its inception in 2009.
The enhancements planned for the UVI St. Croix residence hall are set to begin later this year.
