Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph the University of the Virgin Islands' 61st Commencement Exercises on Thursday, May 15, at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix and on Friday, May 16, at 1 p.m. in the Eldridge W. Blake Sports and Fitness Center on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas. 

The event’s keynote speaker is Hill Harper, an award-winning actor, best-selling author, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. He is known for his powerful advocacy and transformative leadership, and will address graduates, faculty, and guests at the momentous event.  He is a dynamic and inspiring figure whose work spans multiple industries and disciplines and has starred in numerous television and film projects, including his critically acclaimed roles in “The Good Doctor”, “CSI: NY”, “He Got Game”, and “Lackawanna Blues.” 

Retired Brigadier General Deborah Y. Francis Howell, a trailblazer in the Virgin Islands National Guard, made history as the first woman to serve as Adjutant General of the Virgin Islands. A native of St. Thomas and proud UVI alumna, General Howell’s military service spanned 36 years, including her pivotal leadership during the Territory’s response to Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. Howell will be presented with an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters degree on the Albert A. Sheen Campus.  

At UVI’s Commencement Ceremony on the Orville E. Kean Campus, the University will bestow an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters on Brigadier General Sally F. Petty, a dedicated educator and a passionate advocate in the lifelong learning of students who currently serves as principal of the Eudora Kean High School. She is known internationally for her elite military ranking and countless contributions to the Virgin Islands. She currently holds the rank of Brigadier General for the Virgin Islands National Guard.   

Admission to the commencement exercises on both campuses is by ticket only.  Media partners interested in attending the ceremonies must confirm their attendance no later than Monday, May12, by emailing pr@uvi.edu
