Shanta Roberts and Phi-Jah Merchant

Candlelight Vigil to be Held Sept. 3 at UVI’s Student Activity Center on the Sheen Campus

The University of the Virgin Islands mourns the passing of UVI student Phi-Jah E. Merchant, 22, who tragically lost his life in a single-car collision early Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, on the Melvin H. Evans Highway near the William D. Roebuck Industrial Park.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the Student Activity Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The vigil is a student-led event organized by Phi-Jah’s UVI friends. Participants are asked to assist by bringing their own candles in support of this celebration of life.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025, at the David C. Canegata Recreational Center and Sports Complex. The time will be announced.

Phi-Jah was a third semester Process Technology student with a beautiful spirit, radiant smile, and passion for music. Outside of class, he was often seen on the Waterfront in Frederiksted, playing his guitar as cruise ship visitors disembarked, bringing joy to all who passed by.

He is the son of Shanta “Shay” Roberts, who now serves as the Director of the UVI Agriculture Business Center and formerly managed the UVI Bookstore.

“On behalf of the entire UVI family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ms. Roberts and her loved ones,” said UVI President Dr. Safiya George. “Phi-Jah’s passing is an unimaginable loss. We are holding the Roberts and Merchant families in our thoughts and prayers, and we stand ready to support them during this difficult time.”

Dr. George also announced that UVI will establish the Angel Buccaneer Scholarship in memory of Phi-Jah Merchant, Kareem Pinney, 17, who was tragically killed on Nov. 3, 2024, in the early morning hours. Pinney was a freshman residing on campus. The scholarship will also recognize any other UVI student who has tragically lost their life and had their dreams cut short. The scholarship will serve as a living tribute to their memory and a means to support the aspirations of future Buccaneers.
