Session on the floor

The University of the Virgin Islands’ Reichhold Center for the Arts (RCA) will present an unforgettable evening of music and dance when RCA Sessions hosts the Jairay Petty Big Band in “Ode to Cotton Club” on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Elridge Blake Sports & Fitness Center on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas. The cocktail hour begins at 7 p.m., with the concert starting at 8 p.m.

The performance will feature the Jairay Petty Big Band, a local 18-piece orchestra showcasing talented artists from St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Accompanied by vocalists, the ensemble will deliver the timeless sounds of the big band era, including music inspired by Benny Goodman, along with selections rooted in jazz, blues and contemporary favorites.

The evening’s theme, “Ode to Cotton Club,” pays tribute to the legendary Harlem nightclub known for its vibrant energy and iconic musical performances.

“We are trying to create a whole new vibe for this event,” said Denise Humphrey, director of the Reichhold Center for the Arts. “In addition to the incredible music, we will be setting up a dance floor in front of the stage for people to come together and dance and truly experience the spirit of the big band era.” Humphrey encourages guests to dress the part in attire that reflects the elegance and flair of the Cotton Club era, adding to the atmosphere of the evening.

Guests will enjoy a cash bar and tapas by Chef Ishmael. Signature drinks will also be served. Tickets are $45 per person and are available at the door and online.

The concert is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and St. Thomas Credit Union.

“Ode to Cotton Club” is part of UVI’s Charter Month celebration, marking 64 years of service and excellence in higher education in the Virgin Islands. Members of the community can also get a preview of the Jairay Petty Big Band during a free performance at UVI’s annual Afternoon on the Green on Sunday, March 15, where a quintet from the orchestra will take the stage.
