The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) community joins the Virgin Islands and the broader Caribbean in mourning the passing of Richard A. Schrader Sr., an esteemed Crucian author, historian, and cultural bearer whose life’s work preserved and celebrated the stories and traditions of the Virgin Islands.

Schrader, who received an honorary doctorate from UVI in 2016, was widely recognized for his profound contributions to Virgin Islands literature and cultural heritage. Through his writing, he captured the essence of Crucian life, chronicling the voices, values, and lived experiences of the people of St. Croix and the Territory.

“Richard A. Schrader, Sr. was a treasured son of the Virgin Islands whose work ensured that our history and culture would be remembered, honored, and shared with generations to come,” said UVI President Dr. Safiya George. “His words gave voice to our people and preserved the richness of our heritage. The University of the Virgin Islands is proud to have recognized his legacy with an honorary degree, and we remain deeply grateful for his enduring contributions.”

Born on St. Croix, Mr. Schrader’s life journey reflected resilience, service, and dedication. A U.S. Army veteran, former corrections officer, and lifelong public servant, he later devoted himself to writing—producing numerous works that documented Virgin Islands traditions, folklore, and community life. His publications, including Home Sweet Home in 1986, St. Croix and other notable works, remain important cultural records.

Dr. George added, “Mr. Schrader’s impact extends far beyond the written page. He inspired pride in our identity and strengthened our connection to place, history, and community. His legacy aligns deeply with UVI’s mission to serve as a cultural and intellectual anchor for the Virgin Islands.”

The University extends its heartfelt condolences to Schrader’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work. His legacy will continue to inspire the UVI community and all who value the rich cultural heritage of the Virgin Islands.
