August 11, 2026

The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. The meeting will be held in person at The Westin Beach Resort & Spa at Frenchman’s Reef on St. Thomas, immediately following the Board Retreat. Members of the public may access the meeting virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The meeting will begin with the approval of the minutes from the Board’s July 15, 2026, special meeting, followed by comments from Board Chairman Henry C. Smock. Chairman Smock will also report on the Board Retreat and the findings of the recent Board governance assessment.

UVI President Dr. Safiya George will provide an update on the University’s response to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Show Cause Notice and preparations for the Sept. 1, 2026, submission. The Board will also consider ratifying specified procurement exceptions supporting the University’s time-sensitive MSCHE response activities.

Additional agenda items will focus on the Board assessment findings and governance improvement priorities, including recommendations that may require future review of the University’s Bylaws and Board policies.

The Board will also discuss Board and Presidential evaluation processes; Board leadership, committee structure and succession planning; and recommendations for strengthening audit oversight, risk management and institutional accountability. The Board will conclude its governance discussions by considering the next steps for developing and monitoring a governance improvement plan.

The Board is scheduled to enter executive session before returning to regular session. Any actions taken during executive session will be reported before adjournment.
