In preparation for the annual Afternoon on the Green celebration on Sunday, March 16, 2025, which benefits the Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund, the event planning committee is accepting student scholarship applications to attend the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). Additionally, cooks, caterers and restaurants are invited to participate in the event’s taste-testing competition that showcases the creativity and skill of local culinary artists.

“UVI’s Afternoon on the Green is all about community engagement therefore we count on the participation of our community to make the event a special celebration that everyone can enjoy,” said Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, event chair. “Whether you join us as a sponsor, volunteer, cook or attendee, your support makes it possible for two deserving students to jumpstart their higher education journeys at UVI.”

With proceeds from Afternoon on the Green, each year two high school seniors from the Charlotte Amalie High School and the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School are awarded scholarships to attend UVI.  The students are selected based on a minimum GPA of 2.5, completion of the required community service volunteer hours, a video, and a completed application to UVI for the upcoming school year. The Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund was created in honor of local businessman and Chairman of the UVI Research and Technology Park Board, Edward Thomas, Sr. to aid students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Students interested in applying for the scholarships can reach out to their Senior Guidance Counselor and must submit their applications online at aog.uvi.edu by Friday, March 7, 2025.

Now celebrating its 33rd year, Afternoon on the Green is a family-friendly event featuring live entertainment, cultural activities, and local and international foods prepared by volunteer cooks. Restaurants, caterers, bakers and home cooks are encouraged to participate by donating their most mouth-watering dishes or desserts to be sampled by the crowds.
