The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will host its signature annual community event, Afternoon on the Green, on Sunday, March 15, 2026 from 12-5 pm, at the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the Orville E. Kean Campus on St. Thomas. Themed “A Culinary & Cultural Mix at Afternoon on the Green 2026,” the beloved community celebration benefits the Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund, which supports high school students who demonstrate a strong commitment to service and leadership.
Organizers are issuing a special invitation to restaurants, caterers, professional chefs and home cooks across the territory to participate by donating their favorite dishes, desserts and native drinks. Afternoon on the Green has become known for showcasing the Virgin Islands’ rich culinary talent while raising funds for a meaningful cause. Cook registration is now open online.
“Afternoon on the Green is truly a community-powered event,” said Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, chair of the event planning committee. “Our cooks and restaurant partners are at the heart of this experience. Their generosity not only creates an unforgettable afternoon for attendees, but also directly supports students who give back to our community.”
The Edward Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Edward Thomas Sr., local businessman and former chairman of the UVI Research & Technology Park Board. Each year, the fund provides scholarships to St. Thomas high school seniors who plan to attend UVI and who have demonstrated a strong record of community service.
Participating cooks will compete for top honors, including overall favorite and category awards such as Main Dishes, Seafood, Vegetarian Dishes, Soups, Side Dishes, Bread, Pastries/Sweets and Native Drinks. All registered cooks will receive an official Afternoon on the Green apron, along with recognition for their contribution to student success.
Community members are also encouraged to get involved by registering as volunteers, signing up to assist as food servers (health card required), or attending the event to enjoy the festivities and support the cause. Local businesses are invited to participate as sponsors with an opportunity to showcase their services to a wide audience.
Guests can look forward to live music, cultural and educational displays, and a variety of family-friendly activities, making Afternoon on the Green a celebration for all ages. This year, the event will also feature a pickleball tournament at the courts adjacent to the golf course, offering both enthusiasts and spectators a chance to enjoy the fastest-growing sport in the United States.
“Year after year, this event brings together the best of our community—food, music, culture and a shared commitment to education,” Dr. Callwood added. “We invite everyone to join us on March 15 and be part of something that makes a real difference for UVI students.”
