Spring Semester Orientation Set for New and Transfer Students

Orientation for new and transfer students for the Spring 2011 semester is underway this week. Orientation schedules for the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are available on the Admissions section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link .

Registration for New Students Slated for Jan. 5; Late Registration Set Jan. 10

Registration for new students is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2011. Registration is available in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus, registration is available in the Great Hall.

Late registration is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10. A late registration fee of $75 will be charged. On St. Thomas, late registration will be offered in the Access and Enrollment Services area of the Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix, late registration will be available in Evans Center Room 811.

Spring semester classes begin on Monday, Jan. 10.

Students Invited to Apply for UVI Honors Program

Applications are now being accepted for admission into the UVI Honors Program. The Honors Program seeks to produce exceptional scholars and citizens by providing UVI student participants with enriched intellectual, leadership and outreach experiences designed to cultivate thoughtful, deliberative, articulate, ethically grounded, globally connected and actively contributing members of society. Interested students should review the criteria for admission and complete the application provided on the Honors Program website, which is available from the Academics section of the UVI website - www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link . Questions and completed applications should be forwarded to Honors Program Director Dr. LaVerne Brown (LBrown@uvi.edu).

UVI Budget Hearings Slated for Jan. 5 and 11; UVI Community Invited to Attend

UVI Budget Hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, commencing at 8:45 a.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, commencing at 9 a.m. The hearings will feature presentations by the University's various component heads and constituent leaders. All UVI Budget Hearing sessions will be videoconferenced to both campuses. They are open to the UVI Community.

The first session, on Jan. 5, is scheduled to include presentations by leaders from the following areas: the Faculty Association, the Campus Executive Administrator-STC, the School of Nursing, the Vice Provost for Research and Public Service, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the College of Science and Mathematics, the School of Education and the UVI Senate Chair. This session will take place in Teacher Education Building Room 101 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 713 on St. Croix.

On Jan. 11, the session is scheduled to include presentations by leaders from the following areas: the Office of the President, the Chief Information Officer, the Student Government Association-STC, the Vice Provost for Access and Enrollment Services, the UVI Staff Council, the Vice President for Administration & Finance, the Student Government Association-STT, the Campus Executive Administrator-STT, the School of Business and the Provost. This session will take place in Administration and Conference Center Room 142-1B on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 713 on St. Croix.

UVI Will be Closed Jan. 6 and 7 for Three Kings Day, Crucian Christmas Festival

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, in observance of the Three Kings Day Holiday. The University will also be closed on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, to allow attendance or participation in the St. Croix Christmas Festival events, including the Children's Parade slated for 10 a.m. on Friday. Administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Monday, Jan. 10. UVI Spring Semester classes also begin on Monday, Jan. 10.

UVI's Music Area to Present Works by African-Diaspora Composers on Jan. 9

The Music Area of UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will present a performance of music by African-Diaspora composers at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011. Works by R. Nathaniel Dett, Leslie Adams, Lorna C. Young-Wright, Andrés Wheatley, Florence B. Price and Wendell Whalum will be presented. Admission is free. The concert will take place at the Nisky Moravian Church on St. Thomas. The presentation will feature mezzo soprano Janice R. Jackson of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and pianist Lorna C. Young-Wright of the University of the Virgin Islands.

SGA Accepting Applications for Miss UVI Pageant

The Queen's Committee of the St. Croix campus Student Government Association (SGA) has announced that Miss UVI applications are available at the SGA offices and Student Activities Office. Interested female students are encouraged to participate. The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27. For more information, contact Malkia Morton at sgastx@myuvi.net .

Society of V.I. Historians to Hold 25th Annual Meeting Jan. 14 on St. Croix

UVI Professor Emeritus Dr. Arnold Highfield and part-time UVI Professor of Anthropology and History Dr. Betsy Rezende will be among the presenters at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians set for 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Government House in Christiansted, St. Croix. The meeting's theme is "Celebrating the 275th Commemoration of Christiansted Town." Drs. Highfield and Rezende are among seven presenters. Dr. Highfield will provide "An Overview of Christiansted Town." Dr. Rezende will join Anna Walbom in presenting a "Historic Viewing of 20 Rare Photographs: 1860-1917."

Other presenters include George F. Tyson (The Contributions of Africans to the Establishment of Christiansted Town), Poul Olsen (Fights, Frights and Fire Fighters: Social Conflict, Social Capital and the Christiansted Brand Corps), and Bill Cissel (The Military History of Christiansted Town).

A panel comprised of the historians and St. Croix National Park Service Superintendent Joel Tutein will address the theme: "Christiansted Town: Past and Future." St. Croix Student Affairs SYNERGY Newsletter Published

The Spring 2011 edition of SYNERGY, the St. Croix Student Affairs newsletter is now available from the Student Activities section of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this direct link . The newsletter includes a welcome from the Student Affairs staff and photos of some students and staffers. Also featured are comments from several UVI students who attended the 10th Annual Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute held last November in New York City.

2011 Afternoon on the Green Theme: 'Join UVI in Going Green...'

UVI's Afternoon on the Green Committee congratulates Dr. Noreen Michael for submitting the winning theme for the 2011 event. "Join UVI in Going Green, Afternoon on the Green 2011" was selected as the official theme by the committee. Dr. Michael is the chief of staff in the President's Office. Afternoon on the Green will be held on March 13, at the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

Students Encouraged to Submit Afternoon on the Green Artwork; Deadline Jan. 21

The University of the Virgin Islands Afternoon on the Green Committee has issued a call for artwork for the 2011 Afternoon on the Green. All amateur artists in the Virgin Islands are asked to submit artwork that depicts this year's theme, "Join UVI in Going Green, Afternoon on the Green 2011." The artwork should be submitted in PDF format via e-mail to UVI's Special Events Coordinator Liza Margolis at lmargol@uvi.edu . Each entry must include the artist's name, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone number and school (if applicable). Parents' names must be included for artists who are under the age of 18. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, Jan. 21.

The selected artwork will be used in all Afternoon on the Green posters, flyers and t-shirts. The name of the winner will also be used in marketing efforts. High school and college students are especially encouraged to submit artwork. All entries will be displayed at Afternoon on the Green. This contest is a good way for amateur artists in the Virgin Islands to get exposure. For more information, contact Liza Margolis at 693-1053 or send e-mail to lmargol@uvi.edu .

St. Croix Residence Hall Named in Honor of Delta M. Dorsch

UVI named the residence hall complex on the St. Croix campus after Delta M. Dorsch at a dedication ceremony in her honor on Dec. 16, 2010. The St. Croix campus residence hall complex is now known as the Delta M. Jackson Dorsch Complex.

Mrs. Dorsch, a native of Frederiksted, worked for more than 30 years as a teacher and supervisor in the Virgin Islands educational system. She served as the territory's Deputy Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction from 1977 until 1982 and also taught elementary education in undergraduate and graduate programs on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. CES to Offer Free Weight Management Workshops on St. Thomas in January

Two, six-week Weight Management Workshops will be offered to members of the UVI community and the general public beginning in January on St. Thomas. The free workshops, presented by Dr. Caryl Johnson, will focus on topics such as the food pyramid, portion size, energy balance, exercise, behavior modification and menu planning. Sessions are planned from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays from Jan. 18 through Feb. 22, and on Thursdays, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from Jan. 20 through Feb. 24. The workshops are sponsored by the 4-H, Family and Consumer Sciences Program of the UVI Cooperative Extension Services (CES). Sessions will be held at the CES office in the New House Building on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

SBDC Notes...

QuickBooks Basics Workshop Offered on St. Thomas on Jan. 5

The VI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a QuickBooks Basics Workshop for Beginners from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The fee for the hands-on workshop is $99.

The workshop will cover setting up company files, completing the sample "Easy Step Interview," reviewing charts of accounts, items setup, setting preferences and customization of forms. Also included will be directions for everyday activities, such as estimating, invoicing, making and receiving payments, recording deposits, entering bills, credit card entries, writing and processing checks, paying tax liabilities, generating and customizing reports, memorizing transactions, using filters, using passwords, creating an accountant's copy, and data conversion.
