HTA/CELL Alliance to Promote Safer, Healthier Workplace for Hospitality Workers

Fostering safer and healthier workplaces for the hospitality and tourism industry is the goal of a renewed alliance signed Friday, June 3, between the U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel and Tourism Association (USVI-HTA) and the Safety In Paradise (SIP) Program of UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. Through the Alliance agreement, the HTA and UVI's CELL - SIP Program will work together to provide members of the Hotel and Tourism Association with information, guidance and access to training resources. VI SBDC Service Center on St. John Plans Open House on June 17


The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center will conduct an open house for its St. John Service Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 17. The SBDC Service Center is located in UVI's new St. John Academic Center, which is housed in the Marketplace in Cruz Bay, St. John.


The public is invited to learn about the wide array of services the SBDC Center provides for existing business and for entrepreneurs who want to begin businesses. The SBDC offers free, one-on-one counseling, seminars, workshops and training sessions on a wide variety of business topics. Financial Aid Office Offers Summer 2011 Financial Aid Update

UVI's Office of Financial Aid has posted Summer 2011 Financial Aid eligibility criteria and documentation on the UVI web site. With the passage of the FY 2011 spending bill by Congress, the second scheduled Pell Grant award will remain in effect only for the Summer 2011 term. The second scheduled Pell Grant will be eliminated for Summer 2012. Science 100 Offered During Summer Session II on St. Thomas Campus

UVI students who need to retake the course SCI 100 - The Natural World: The Caribbean - can do so during Summer Session II on the St. Thomas campus. SCI 100 is a Freshman Experience course and general education requirement for students entering UVI as freshmen. Students who have earned a C-, D or F in the course may retake the course to earn a better grade. Summer Session II classes run from June 23 to July 29. SCI 100 will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to11:50 a.m. for lectures, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for labs.

New UVI Residential Summer Bridge Program to Begin in July

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) will launch a new program this July for graduating high school students who have been accepted to the University as freshmen for the Fall 2011 semester. The program will help students jump-start their college careers at UVI by improving their understanding and skills in Math and English, according to Dr. Haldane Davies, special assistant to UVI President Dr. David Hall.

Students, 40 on St. Thomas and 40 on St. Croix, will live in UVI residence halls and take courses in mathematics, English, reading and speech, while getting introduced to college life and the institutions' support systems. UVI Accepting Applications for the Master of Arts in Psychology Program

The University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications from students interested in enrolling in its Master of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in counseling program for the Fall 2011 semester. The MAP program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to allow them to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. This graduate Psychology program seeks to prepare practitioners to use the science of psychology for the promotion of human well-being, specifically in the provision of psychological services to children, adolescents, and families in the mental health, judicial, and educational systems. It provides some with a stepping stone toward licensure.

Summer Research Symposium Slated for July 29 on St. Thomas

UVI's Summer Research Symposium is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July 29. It will be held in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The symposium provides a showcase for a student research in STEM disciplines, with faculty at the University of the Virgin Islands, as well as at other institutions. (STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.) UVI Schedules Placement Tests for English and Mathematics

The following schedule for English Placement Tests and Math Placement Tests have been announced by UVI.

Students should bring two blue or black ink pens for English, pencils for math (calculators are optional and allowed on Part I of the exam), and a photo ID. Students should plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to any test in order to register.

SAT Prep Course Offered for Public High School Students on St. Thomas, St. Croix

The V.I. Department of Education, in collaboration with the UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center, is accepting applications for a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Prep course that will begin June 25. Applicants must be a public high school student on St. Thomas or St. Croix and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Interested applicants must submit their applications to the UVICELL Center by Friday, June 10, to be considered for the program. The SAT Prep Course is free and is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Education.


The program is designed to improve SAT scores by lowering testing anxiety and enhancing test-taking skills. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information or to request an application, call (340) 693-1106.
