Media Invited to Cover UVI Summer Science Research Symposium

UVI research students conduct an experiement.

Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph the 13th Annual Summer Science Research Symposium. The research symposium takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 31, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus. 

The goal of the summer symposium is to showcase student research at the University of the Virgin Islands as well as other institutions. Approximately 49 undergraduate students will make poster presentations displaying the results of their research experiences working directly with a range of researchers during this past summer and academic year. UVI students on both campuses were involved. Some of their topics include: 

  • Effect of Marijuana on Epilepsy
  • Nuclear Fusion: Harnessing the Power of the Stars
  • Shark Migration
  • The Impact of the Automobile Industry on the Environment
  • Abundance and Diversity of Seagrass on the North Side of the St. Croix East End Marine Park
  • Prevalence of Childhood Obesity in the East End Area on St. Thomas
  • The Prevalence of Mental Illness in College Undergraduates
  • Tackling HIV: Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy
  • Impacts of Fishing on Parrotfish Grazing
  • Magnetic Energy Coupling Across Solar Atmospheric Plasma Conditions
