Agroecology is an interdisciplinary subject, in which students are trained both in
the basic conventional aspects of agricultural systems (agronomic science, soil science,
basic climatology, agricultural engineering, etc.) but also in natural resources management,
ecological sciences, landscape-scale analysis, and interactions with human society
and social sciences. Agroecology is also a social perspective, and emphasizes the
concept of “food sovereignty,” which places importance not only on the quantity of
food available for a population of people, but on the ability of the community to
exercise cultural, economic, and political self-determination of their own food supply
(Altieri et al., 2012).
