Commencement Ceremonies are always glorious moments in the life of a university. It represents the culmination of a student's journey towards their academic destination. It is also a time for the university to collectively celebrate our students' success and life. We have gathered today to continue this sacred tradition. However, the Class of 2020 is like no other. These graduates endured two category five hurricanes and a pandemic which altered their academic journeys and their lives. Yet, they still reached their destination with pride and humility....
The 2020 Commencement Ceremonies that were originally scheduled for May were postponed until December. We did not want to deprive our graduates of this glorious experience and we hoped COVID-19 would allow us to bring together our graduates, their family members and supporters. However, there are times when we cannot control the circumstances of our present and thus we must create new futures. This remote ceremony is our creative attempt to provide our graduates with the honor they deserve.
It is often said that you cannot capture magic and place it in a bottle. So, we cannot capture the magic of our normal Commencement Ceremonies and put it into a technology platform. However, we can create a new magic that transcends what our traditional ceremonies contained. Though our graduates will not walk across a stage, they have marched across our hearts and minds and they have left an indelible mark. While they may not be able to hear thousands of people applaud their success, we bow to them in reverence for what they have achieved.
I thank all of our staff and student leaders who have worked creatively to design and implement this new experience. I sincerely want to thank our graduates for their patience, perseverance and dedication to the University of the Virgin Islands. The Class of 2020 will be forever etched in the stones of our memory. We will remember them not for the fact that they encountered two hurricanes and a pandemic, but because they would not allow any force to stand in the way of their march to success. Their sacrifice will prepare them to change the world and make it a better place for those who come after them.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire University community, we salute the Class of 2020 on your accomplishments and wish you Godspeed. The University is extremely proud of you and look forward to celebrating with you. We encourage you to remain engaged with your alma mater, and remember that you will always be ambassadors for the University of the Virgin Islands.

Virtual Commencement Announcement
Dear UVI Community:
Last spring, in consultation with the members of the 2020 Graduation Class, the University decided to postpone the May 2020 Commencement ceremonies until December 10th and 11th. We made that decision on the assumption that by December 2020 COVID-19 would have receded and that we would be able to safely resume normal activities. Though the incidences of the coronavirus in the Territory have stabilized, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to convene our normal Commencement ceremonies on either campus in December.Read More
